एक दिन एक नर्सिंग होम में एक बच्ची का जन्म हुआ। जब डॉक्टर ने उसे देखा तो पाया कि वह बहुत ही कमजोर है। डॉक्टर ने उसकी मां को यह खबर देते हुए कहा, ‘आपकी बच्ची बहुत कमजोर है। मैं आपका दुख समझ सकता हूं, लेकिन इसके लिए आपको साहस रखना होगा और अपनी बच्ची से जुड़ी एक खबर सुनने के लिए खुद को तैयार करना होगा।’ आंसू लिए, कांपती हुई आवाज में मां ने पूछा, ‘क्या अब कभी मेरी बच्ची ठीक नहीं हो पाएगी? क्या अब वो ज्यादा दिन...’ मां का दिल टूट चुका था, लेकिन अभी उसकी बात पूरी भी नहीं हुई थी कि डॉक्टर बीच में ही बोल पड़ा, ‘घबराइए मत, आपकी बच्ची जीवित रहेगी। लेकिन वह आम बच्चों की तरह नहीं होगी। वह जिंदगी में न कभी देख पाएगी और न ही कभी सुन पाएगी।’ यह सुन कर मां चौंक गई और बोली, ‘क्या मेरी बच्ची अंधी और बहरी है? अब मेरी बेटी का क्या होगा?’ कमरे से बाहर आते समय डाक्टर खुद से कह रहा था, ‘यह बहुत पीड़ादायक केस है। मैंने आज तक अपनी जिंदगी में इस तरह का कोई केस नहीं देखा।’ लेकिन यही बच्ची आगे चल कर हेलेन केलर के नाम से विश्व भर में प्रसिद्ध हुई। वह अपनी खुशमिजाजी और लोक कल्याणकारी कार्यों के लिए दुनिया बर में जानी गईं। अपनी स्पर्श करने और सूंघने की शक्ति के जरिए हेलेन केलर ने बहुत मेहनत से बोलना और लिखना सीख लिया। बैचलर ऑफ आर्ट्स की पढ़ाई पूरी करने वाली वह पहली महिला बनीं। उनकी संघर्ष की यह अनोखी कहानी प्रसिद्ध हो गई और उन्हें दुनिया भर से लोगों को संबोधित और प्रेरित करने के लिए बुलाया जाने लगा। उन्होंने कई प्रेरक पुस्तकें भी लिखीं। वह हर उस इंसान के लिए प्रेरणा बनीं जो जन्मजात कमियां होने के बावजूद जीवन में कुछ करना चाहता है।
