श्रेष्ठ मनुष्य की पहचान ..(Best man identified..)

एक दिन राजा मलिक ने सोचा कि उसकी कीर्ति दूर-दूर तक फैली है, प्रजा और राज दरबारी उसकी प्रशंसा करते हैं। क्या वह सचमुच श्रेष्ठ है, इसका पता लगाना चाहिए। इस संदर्भ में राजा ने विद्वानों, मंत्रियों और सेनापति से पूछा। उन्होंने कहा, ‘महाराज, आपका चरित्र तो चंद्रमा के समान धवल है।’ राजा ने सोचा, जब तक मेरी प्रशंसा प्रजा नहीं करती, मैं प्रशंसनीय नहीं हो सकता। उन्होंने प्रजा से पूछा। कइयों ने कहा, ‘आप में कोई त्रुटि नहीं है।’ राजा ने सोचा- शायद भय के कारण प्रजा ने प्रशंसा की हो। सच जानने हेतु मुझे बाहर निकलना चाहिए। राजा मलिक रथ पर बैठकर बाहर निकल गए। वह गांव-गांव जाकर पूछने लगे। सभी जगह से यही उत्तर मिला कि राजा में कोई अवगुण नहीं है। राजा का रथ आगे बढ़ रहा था, उधर दूसरी ओर से वाराणसी के राजा ब्रम्हादत्त का रथ आ रहा था। राजा मलिक ने ब्रम्हादत्त के सारथी से कहा, ‘अपने रथ को सामने से हटा लो।’ सारथी ने उत्तर दिया-‘मेरे रथ पर सभी गुणों के भंडार काशी के राजा ब्रम्हादत्त बैठे हुए हैं। मेरे रथ को पहले निकल जाने दीजिए।’ राजा मलिक बोले, ‘सभी गुणों का भंडार तो मैं हूं। तुम अपने रथ को बगल में कर लो।’ राजा ब्रम्हादत्त अभी तक मौन थे। राजा मलिक की बात सुनकर उन्होंने पूछा, ‘क्या मैं जान सकता हूं कि आप अपने को श्रेष्ठ क्यों समझते हैं?’ राजा मलिक ने कहा, ‘मैं बुराई करने वालों के साथ बुराई और भलाई करने वालों के साथ भलाई करता हूं।’ राजा ब्रम्हादत्त बोले, ‘श्रेष्ठ वह है जो बुराई करने वालों के साथ भी भलाई करे।’ यह सुनकर राजा मलिक के ज्ञान चक्षु खुल गए।
