पैसा परिवारों को बांधता भी है और तोड़ता भी है। पैसा भय भी लाता है और अभय भी बनाता है। पैसे के बल पर आप नचवाते भी हैं और पैसा आपको नचाता भी है। संतों ने भी पैसे के विषय में सोचा है। और यह पाया कि पैसे को तीन भागों में बांटा जा सकता है। पैसे को कमाना, पैसे को संभालना, पैसे को खर्च करना। संतों ने कहा - तीनों स्तर दुखदायी हैं।

सबसे पहला पड़ाव है - कमाना। आदमी कमाने के लिए हर वक्त दर-दर की ठोकरें खाता है। दूसरा पड़ाव है - संभालना। 

भारत में तो खास तौर पर संभालना और मुश्किल है। लोग पैसे दीवारों में चुनवा देते हैं, जमीन में दबा देते हैं। 

भारत में अरबों रुपया बैंकों में ऐसा पड़ा जिसका कोई लेनदार नहीं। पैसा आए तो व्यक्ति चोरों से, लुटेरों से तो डरता ही है, पर आदि शंकराचार्य अपनी पुस्तक ‘भज-गोविंदम’ में पहले ही कह चुके हैं कि धनवान अपनी औलाद से भी डरता है। तीसरा पड़ाव है - खर्च करना। पैसा दूसरे का हो तो खर्चना आसान है। परंतु अपना हो तो मामला गड़बड़ हो जाता है। सबसे अधिक खरीदारी वे युवा करते हैं जो कमाते नहीं। 

सौ टके की बात यह है कि पैसा एक विचार है, जिसमें हम यह सोचते हैं कि 

जब दुख आएगा तो पैसा हमारी सहायता करेगा। करे या न करे, यह अलग विषय है। अंत में इतना ही कि जब यह कहा जाता है कि अर्थ अनर्थ है, इसका सीधा-सा मतलब है कि पैसा एक जरूरी पर बेहद खतरनाक वस्तु है। 

उदाहरण के लिए बिजली के मीटर के ऊपर खतरा भले ही लिखा होता है, लेकिन इसका मतलब ये कभी नहीं कि बिजली का प्रयोग न करें। बल्कि उसका प्रयोग बड़ी सावधानी से करें। और अगर आपने बिजली का प्रयोग असावधानी से किया तो बड़ी परेशानी भी खड़ी हो सकती है। इसी तरह धन का प्रयोग सावधानी से करें अन्यथा अर्थ, अनर्थ तो कर ही देगा।
