व्यक्ति की प्रतिष्ठा का आकलन उसके जीवन -मूल्यों से किया जाता है। जीवन-मूल्य सफलता के लिए जरूरी हैं। वैदिक काल से होते हुए, गौतम बुद्ध और महात्मा गांधी तक अनेक महापुरुष जीवन-मूल्यों के कारण इतिहास में अमर हो गए। जीवन मूल्य व्यक्ति को सकारात्मक बनाते हैं। याद रखें, जो व्यक्ति मूल्यहीन जीवन जीते हैं वे समाज में व्यर्थ माने जाते हैं। ऐसे व्यक्ति समाज के लिए बोझ माने जाते हैं। निठल्ले व्यक्ति समाज का कभी भी मार्ग-दर्शन नहीं करते। मूल्यहीन व्यक्ति की जिंदगी पंगु मानी जाती है, जिसमें कोई गति और निरंतरता नहीं होती और सिद्धांतों के अभाव में ऐसे लोग महत्वहीन, अनुपयोगी और परिवार के लिए बोझ स्वरूप होते हैं। सिद्धांत और मूल्य जीवन को ऊर्जा देते हैं। समाज हो चाहे परिवार, सबका संचालन कुछ आदर्शे और सिद्धांतों से होता है। यदि जीवन में इनका अभाव हो जाए तो समाज का ढांचा गड़बड़ाने लगता है। नियम जीवन को अनुशासित करते हैं। ये जीवन के आधारभूत तत्व हैं। अनियमित व्यक्ति जीवन के किसी क्षेत्र में सफल नहीं माना जाता। जीवन अनेक सत्यों, आदर्शो और नियमों के द्वारा संचालित होता है। इन्हीं के द्वारा जीवन-मूल्य स्थापित होते हैं। संसार के सभी महापुरुष या सफलतम व्यक्ति अपने ऊंचे आदर्शो और मान्यताओं के कारण ही समाज में गाथा बनकर अपना नाम रोशन करते हैं। समाज सर्वदा ऐसे लोगों का अनुकरण करता है। रीढ़ विहीन या आतंकवादी सोच के व्यक्ति का समाज में कभी आदर नहीं होता। ऐसे लोग सदैव आलोचना और निंदा के पात्र होते हैं। सामाजिक प्रतिष्ठा प्राप्त करने के लिए व्यक्ति को कुछ मूल्य निर्धारित करने पड़ते हैं। कल्याण और सफलता को पाना है तो हमें मूल्य आधारित जीवन का मार्ग चुनना पड़ेगा। इसके अभाव में जीवन की सार्थकता सदा संदिग्ध बनी रहेगी। हम समाज और राष्ट्र के लिए उपयोगी बनेंगी, यही हमारी सार्थकता है। इसके लिए हमें मूल्य आधारित जीवन जीने के मार्ग का चयन करना पड़ेगा। नि:संदेह मूल्यों का निर्धारण करने में हमारे लिए प्रारंभ में कठिनाइयां आएंगी जिनसे हमें जूझना पड़ेगा। जीवन-मूल्य सहज ही निर्धारित नहीं होते, इसके लिए त्याग और सत्य के तत्व जरूरी हैं। हम दूर न जाकर मात्र गांधी, गोखले, तिलक, राममोहनराय आदि-आदि लोगों की तरफ दृष्टि डालें तो सहज ही पता चल जाएगा कि इन लोगों के जीवन में मूल्यों का क्या स्थान था। सभ्य बने, मिलनसार बने और समाज में आदर्श स्थापित करे.
