चौथे दिन ठाकुर आया। उसके ललाट पर फिर तिलक आड़ा था। सेठ क्रोध में बोला -‘ठाकुर! मैंने तुमसे क्या कहा था, कुछ समझ में आया या नहीं?’ ठाकुर ने कहा -‘जी, सब समझ रहा हूं।’ सेठ ने पूछा -‘तिलक कैसे किया है?’ ठाकुर ने कुर्ता ऊपर कर पेट दिखा दिया। वहां खड़ा तिलक किया हुआ था। सेठ बोले -‘यह क्या मजाक कर रहा है?’ ठाकुर ने शांत भाव से कहा -‘सेठ जी, नौकरी पेट करता है, सिर नहीं। मेरे पास अपना दिमाग है और मैं दिमाग से सोचता हूं, अपनी आस्था के अनुरूप तिलक करता हूं। पेट को भूख लगती है। उसके लिए आपकी नौकरी करता हूं। इसी भावना से आपका तिलक पेट पर लगा लिया है।’

यह छोटी-सी कहानी बड़ा रहस्य खोलती है। जहां मत-मजहबों को लेकर छोटी-छोटी बातों में व्यक्ति उलझ जाता है, वहां धर्म की बात गौण हो जाती है और उपासना प्रमुख हो जाती है। संसार में जितने मत, मजहब या संप्रदाय हैं, वे सब बरकरार रहें, कोई कठिनाई नहीं होगी। किंतु जहां अज्ञानवश सबको एक कर दिया जाता है या अपने-अपने मत के आग्रह से दंगे शुरू हो जाते हैं, वहां स्थिति बिगड़ने लगती है।

जरूरत धर्म के वास्तविक स्वरूप को स्थापित करने की है। जहां वास्तविक धर्म होगा वहां यह नहीं हो सकता कि एक धनवान अपने पैसे के बल पर, सत्ताधारी अपनी सत्ता के बल पर और बलवान अपने डंडे के प्रभाव से धर्म को खरीद ले और इंसान को कमजोर कर दे। उसे उपदेश, शिक्षा या हृदय परिवर्तन से ही पाया जा सकता है। धर्म के क्षेत्र में पनपती विकृतियां और विसंगतियां दूर करने के लिए जरूरी है कि हमारे विचार शुद्ध, असंकीर्ण और व्यापक हों। धर्म का मतलब है प्रेम, करुणा और सद्भावना। उसका प्रतीक फिर चाहे राम हों या रहीम, बुद्ध हों या महावीर, कृष्ण हों या करीम, सबकी आत्मा में धर्म की एक ही आवाज होगी। धर्म दीवार नहीं, द्वार है। लेकिन दीवार जब धर्म बन जाती है तो अन्याय और अत्याचार को खुलकर खेलने का अवसर मिल जाता है।
