हकीम लुकमान सिर्फ हकीम नहीं अनेक विषयों के जानकार और विचारक भी थे। जब वे मृत्युशय्या पर अंतिम सांसें ले रहे थे तो उन्होंने इशारे से अपने बेटे को पास बुलाकर कहा-‘बेटा, मैंने तुझे यूं तो समय-समय पर अनेक शिक्षाएं दी हैं, पर जाते-जाते एक अंतिम शिक्षा देना चाहता हूं।’ इतना कहकर लुकमान ने बेटे को पूजा के कक्ष से धूपदान लाने को कहा। जब वह धूपदान लेकर हाजिर हुआ तो लुकमान ने उसमें से चुटकी भर चंदन लेकर उसके हाथ में थमाया और इशारे से बताया कि अब वह चूल्हे में से कोयला उठाकर लाए। जब बेटा कोयला ले आया तो उन्होंने दूसरी हथेली में कोयला रखने का आदेश दिया। कुछ देर बाद फिर लुकमान ने कहा- ‘अब इन्हें अपने-अपने स्थान पर वापस रख आओ।’ बेटे ने वैसा ही किया। उसकी जिस हथेली में चंदन था, वह अब भी महक रही थी और जिस हाथ में कोयला था, वह कोयला छोड़ देने पर भी एकदम काली नजर आ रही थी। लुकमान ने अपने बेटे को समझाते हुए कहा-‘बेटे, एक बात हमेशा याद रखना। अच्छे लोगों का संग चंदन जैसा होता है। जब तक उनका संग रहेगा तब तक तो खुशबू मिलेगी ही, साथ छूटने के बाद भी अच्छे विचारों की सुगंध से जिंदगी तरोताजा बनी रहेगी। इसी तरह दुर्जनों का संग कोयले जैसा है। जब तक हाथ में कोयला है तब तक तो हाथ काला रहता है ही, छोड़ देने के बाद भी उस पर कालिमा बनी रहती है। इसलिए बेटा, जीवन में सदैव चंदन जैसे संस्कारी लोगों का ही संग करना और कोयले जैसे कुसंग से दूर रहना। लुकमान का बेटा पिता की इस शिक्षा को जीवन भर नहीं भूला।
