अक्सर एक सवाल लोगों के मन में उठता है कि आध्यात्मिकता और भौतिकता में क्या फर्क है ? दरअसल एक व्यक्ति है और दूसरी वस्तु है। लेकिन वस्तु व्यक्ति के लिए है न कि व्यक्ति वस्तु के लिए। व्यक्ति-व्यक्ति से प्रेम करे और व्यक्ति वस्तु का उपयोग करना सीखे, इससे समाज स्वस्थ रहेगा। पर आज समाज में इसकी परिभाषा बदल गई है। आज व्यक्ति-व्यक्ति का उपयोग करता है और वस्तु को प्रेम करता है। इसलिए उसमें भौतिकतावाद की गंध आ रही है। इंसान मिटकर पदार्थ बन गया है। पैसा उसके सिर चढ़कर बोल रहा है। 

अब पैसे वालों के बेटे नहीं होते, वारिस होते हैं। पैसे वालों से मेरा अभिप्राय है- जैसे तैसे या किसी भी तरीके से धनी बन जाना। अपने शास्त्रों में पुत्र शब्द का भावार्थ है- जो नर्क से तारे वह पुत्र। जिस पिता ने गलत तरीके से धन एकत्रित किया, उसके वारिस पिता को तो तारेंगे ही नहीं और वह खुद का भी कल्याण नहीं करेंगे। वर्तमान समाज भौतिकता में जकड़कर ठस हो गया है। जहां तक नजर जाती है, हर क्षेत्र में जड़ता फैल रही है। जबकि आध्यात्मिकता में दिखावा नहीं है। आध्यात्मिक इंसान प्रदर्शनवादी या सुविधाभोगी नहीं होता। वह खुद के उत्थान के साथ-साथ समाज को जोड़ने की बात करता है। दूसरों की मदद के लिए हमेशा तत्पर रहता है। 

इतना ही नहीं, वह आध्यात्मिक दर्शन को महत्व देता है, प्रदर्शन को नहीं। तीन शब्द महत्व के हैं- दर्शन, तत्व दर्शन और अध्यात्म। इन्हीं से विविध प्रकार के दर्शन हमें प्राप्त हुए हैं। योग, सांख्य, वैशेषिक, न्याय, पूर्व मीमांसा, उत्तर मीमांसा, जैन और अनेक प्रकार के दर्शन भारतीय संस्कृति में हैं। आज वस्तु से प्रेम के चलते दर्शनवादी मिटकर प्रदर्शनवादी बनते जा रहे हैं। हमारे यहां चार पुरुषार्थ हैं-धर्म, अर्थ, काम और मोक्ष। धर्म का हेतु मोक्ष है, अर्थ नहीं। अर्थ का हेतु धर्म है, काम नहीं। मतलब धन का हेतु ये नहीं कि खाओ पीओ और ऐश करो। काम का हेतु इंद्रियों का विषय भोग नहीं। तो जीवन का हेतु क्या है? जीवन का हेतु तत्व को जानने की इच्छा यानी जिज्ञासा।

कोई उस तत्व को परमात्मा, तो कोई ब्रह्म कहता है। तत्व को जानने की प्यास के चलते ही ये जीवन है। आज इंसान मंदिर में जाता है तो वहां भी परमात्मा से धन ही मांगता है। उनसे सौदा करने लगा है। धर्म का हेतु अर्थ बन गया है, मोक्ष नहीं। एक समय ऐसा था जब लोग धर्म को केंद्र में रखकर व्यापार करते थे। पर आज धर्म व्यापार का रूप ले रहा है। चारों तरफ कीर्ति और प्रदर्शन की जबरदस्त स्पर्धा दिख रही है। समाज को इस जड़ता से कोई बाहर निकाल सकता है तो वह है आध्यात्मिकता। आध्यात्मिकता स्व के लाभ के साथ समाज को जोड़ती है, जबकि भौतिकता इंसान और समाज को तोड़ती है।
