धर्म-कर्म का उद्देश्य ..(The purpose of religion on..)

काशी में गंगा के किनारे एक संत का आश्रम था। उसमें कई शिष्य अध्ययन करते थे। आखिर वह दिन आया जब शिक्षा पूरी होने के बाद गुरुदेव उन्हें अपना आशीर्वाद देकर विदा करने वाले थे। सुबह गंगा में स्नान करने के बाद गुरुदेव और सभी शिष्य पूजा करने बैठ गए। सभी ध्यानमग्न थे कि एक बच्चे की ‘बचाओ बचाओ’ की आवाज सुनाई पड़ी। बच्चा नदी में डूब रहा था। आवाज सुनकर गुरुदेव की आंखें खुल गईं। उन्होंने देखा कि एक शिष्य पूजा छोड़ बच्चे को बचाने के लिए नदी में कूद गया। वह किसी तरह बच्चे को बचाकर किनारे ले आया, लेकिन दूसरे शिष्य आंखें बंद किए ध्यानमग्न थे। पूजा खत्म होने के बाद गुरुदेव ने उन शिष्यों से पूछा,‘क्या तुम लोगों को डूबते हुए बच्चे की आवाज सुनाई पड़ी थी?’ शिष्यों ने कहा,‘हां गुरुदेव, सुनी तो थी।’ गुरुदेव ने कहा,‘तब तुम्हारे मन में क्या विचार उठा था?’ शिष्यों ने कहा, ‘हम लोग ध्यान में डूबे थे। दूसरी तरफ ध्यान देने की बात मन में उठी ही नहीं।’ गुरुदेव ने कहा,‘लेकिन तुम्हारा एक मित्र बच्चे को बचाने के लिए पूजा छोड़कर नदी में कूद पड़ा।’ शिष्यों ने कहा,‘उसने पूजा छोड़कर अधर्म किया है।’ इस पर गुरुदेव ने कहा,‘अधर्म उसने नहीं, तुम लोगों ने किया है। तुमने डूबते हुए बच्चे की पुकार अनसुनी कर दी। पूजा-पाठ, धर्म-कर्म का एक ही उद्देश्य होता है प्राणियों की रक्षा करना। तुम आश्रम में धर्मशास्त्रों, व्याकरणों, धर्म-कर्म आदि में पारंगत तो हुए, लेकिन धर्म का सार नहीं समझ सके। परोपकार और संकट में फंसे दूसरे की सहायता करने से बड़ा कोई धर्म नहीं। पूजा पाठ का असल संदेश है कि हम दूसरे की मदद करें।’ गुरुदेव ने उस शिष्य को अपना आशीर्वाद देकर आश्रम से विदा किया जिसने डूबते हुए बच्चे को बचाया था। शेष शिष्यों से कहा, ‘अभी तुम्हारी शिक्षा अधूरी है।’
