हम अपने आसपास लोगों को प्रायः यह कहते हुए सुनते है कि उनके पास धन-संपत्ति, पद-प्रतिष्ठा तो है, लेकिन चित्त फिर भी अधीर और अशांत रहता है। झांककर भीतर देखने की कोशिश करें तो पाते हैं कि अंदर अविश्वास और आशंकाओं का स्याह अंधेरा छाया है। जीवन में चारों तरफ भयानक खालीपन है और समस्त सांसारिक उप्लब्धियों के बावजूद सुख की सच्ची अनुभूति नहीं हो पा रही। क्या आपने कभी यह विचार किया है कि यह चिराग तले अंधेरा जैसी स्थिति क्यों उत्पन्न होती है? संसार में इतना कुछ हासिल कर लेने के बाद भी जीवन हमें क्यों अर्थहीन लगता है? यदि इस प्रश्न को हम वृक्ष की आंतरिक संरचना से जोड़ लें तो यह उलझी हुई गुत्थी सुलझाना बहुत आसान हो जाता है। वृक्ष जीव-जगत में अकेला ऐसा जीव है जो भूतल पर, उसके ऊपर और नीचे, तीनों डाइमेंशन में विकसित होता है। वृक्ष के तने से निकली शाखाएं जितना ऊपर की ओर बढ़ती हैं, उसकी जड़ें उतनी ही नीचे जमीन में गहरी उतरती जाती हैं। उन्हीं से उसकी धरती पर पकड़ मजबूत होती है और वह अपने तने और उनसे फूटी शाखाओं, उनसे निकली हरी-भरी टहनियों, उन पर झूल रही फूल-पत्तियों और अन्य रचनाओं को स्थायित्व प्रदान करता है। ऐसे वृक्ष जिनकी जड़ें धरती में गहरी नहीं उतरी होतीं, वे हल्के से आंधी-तूफान में ही उखड़ कर धराशायी हो जाते हैं। जबकि ठोस जड़ों वाले वृक्ष आसमां से बातें करते सदियों तक सीधे खड़े रहते हैं और बड़े से बड़ा आंधी-तूफान उनका बाल-बांका नहीं कर पाता। 

वृक्ष के इस जैविक आचरण से हम जीवन में सीधी सीख ले सकते हैं। मानव जीवन में सांसारिक उप्लब्धियों का स्थान वृक्ष के प्रकट रूप-आकार के समान है। चाहे वह कितना ही आकर्षक हो, उस पर कितने ही लुभावने फूल खिले हों, कितने ही रसीले फल लदे हों, उसे सच्ची सुरक्षा, सच्चा स्थायित्व तभी मिल पाता है जब हम अपने भीतर मजबूत जड़ें विकसित कर लेने में सफल होते हैं। मानव जीवन में मजबूत जड़ें पाने के लिए हमें आध्यात्म में गहरे उतरने की जरूरत होती है। पर मोह-माया की चकाचौंध में हम जीवन के इस पक्ष की अवहेलना कर देते हैं। नतीजतन हमारे भीतर छोटी-मोटी विपत्तियों को झेलने की भी ताकत नहीं विकसित हो पाती, जरा सी आंधी आई नहीं कि हम टूटकर गिर जाते हैं। 

सच्चा सुख अध्यात्म की गहराइयों में उतर कर ही पाया जा सकता है। परमात्मा के प्रति समर्पण भाव से कर्म करते हुए जीना अध्यात्म की पहली सीढ़ी है। इसी के बाद आंतरिक अनुभव की यात्रा शुरू होती है। कोई इस यात्रा में जितना गहरा उतरता जाता है, भौतिक उपलब्धियों का मोह उतना ही पीछे छूटता जाता है। अंतर्मन के भीतर ज्ञान की जो निर्मल ज्योति जन्म लेती है, उसी से जीवन में चिर आनंद की प्राप्ति होती है।
