निर्भीक युवक ..(Bold youth...)

एक बार उत्तरी वर्जीनिया में कुछ युवक भ्रमण के लिए पहुंचे। भ्रमण करते-करते एक जगह जब वे भोजन करने के लिए बैठे तो उन्हें किसी स्त्री के रोने की आवाज सुनाई दी। वह जोर-जोर से कह रही थी, ‘मुझे छोड़ दो, मुझे छोड़ दो।’ युवक भोजन छोड़ कर उस ओर दौड़े जिस ओर से आवाज आ रही थी। उस स्त्री का बच्चा नदी में गिर गया था और कोई भी व्यक्ति उसे निकालने की हिम्मत नहीं कर रहा था। ‘आप मुझे इन संबंधियों से छुड़ा दीजिए ताकि मैं अपने बच्चे को नदी से निकाल सकूं। ये न तो स्वयं कोई प्रयत्न कर रहे हैं और न ही मुझे कुछ करने दे रहे हैं।’ स्त्री ने कहा तो उनमें से एक युवक ने पलक झपकते ही कुछ निश्चय किया और कपड़े उतार कर नदी में कूद गया। वह एक अच्छा तैराक था और लहरों से जूझ रहा था। वह युवक जान हथेली पर रख कर बहते हुए बच्चे का पीछा कर रहा था ताकि बच्चा उसकी पकड़ में आ जाए, लेकिन लहरें बार-बार उसे ठगती थीं और बच्चे को उसके हाथ से छीन कर ऐसे ले जातीं जैसे उन्होंने कसम खा रखी हो कि बच्चे को उसके हाथ नहीं आने देंगी। पर आखिरकार युवक बच्चे तक पहुंच ही गया। बच्चे की मां, जो उन्हें अपलक नेत्रों से देख रही थी, चिल्लाई, ‘वो रहे! वो हैं।’ फिर उसकी कृतज्ञ पुकार भगवान का बारंबार आभार व्यक्त करने लगी। उसने पूरे मन से कहा, ‘तुम्हारे इस उपकार का बदला कोई भी और कभी भी नहीं चुका सकता। 

मुझे मेरे बच्चे की प्राणों की भीख देकर तुमने मुझ पर जो उपकार किया है, उसका फल तुम्हें भगवान ही देंगे। मैं तो प्रार्थना ही कर सकती हूं कि तुम्हारी कीर्ति युगों-युगों तक फैले।’ बच्चे के लिए अपने प्राण की बाजी लगाने वाला यह युवक जार्ज वाशिंगटन था जो बाद में अमेरिका का राष्ट्रपति बना।
