एक दिन शेर का बच्चा भटककर एक गांव में पहुंच गया। एक चरवाहे ने देखा, छोटा-सा शेर का बच्चा बड़ा ही दुर्बल है और अगर देख-भाल नहीं की गई तो वह मर जाएगा। उसने उसे अपने फार्म में ले जाकर दूध पिलाया। अब वह भेड़ों के साथ ही रहने लगा और उनसे उसकी दोस्ती हो गई। भेड़ें चरने के लिए बाहर जाएं, तो वह भी उनके साथ जाए और घास चरने की कोशिश करे। धीरे-धीरे भेड़ों के साथ रहते हुए शेर का बच्चा यह समझने लगा कि वह भी भेड़ है। 

एक दिन जंगल की ओर से जोर की दहाड़ सुनाई दी। यह सुनकर सारी भेड़ें डर के मारे छिप गईं तो शेर का बच्चा भी छिपने की कोशिश करने लगा। उसने सोचा कि सारी भेड़ें छिप रही हैं तो मैं भी छिप जाता हूं। जंगल से शेर उसी गांव की ओर आ निकला। उसने शेर के बच्चे को छिपते देखा तो वह उसके पास आकर बोला,‘तू क्यों छिप रहा है?’ शेर के बच्चे ने कहा,‘तुम मुझे खा जाओगे, मुझे डर लग रहा है।’ शेर ने कहा, ‘क्या तुम जानते नहीं कि तुम कौन हो?’ शेर के बच्चे ने कहा,‘मैं तो भेड़ हूं।’ बड़े शेर ने कहा,‘नहीं, तुम मेरे साथ आओ। मैं तुम्हें बताता हूं कि वास्तव में तुम कौन हो?’ शेर उसे तालाब के किनारे ले गया और बोला,‘अब तालाब में अपनी परछाईं देखो।’ जब उस शेर के बच्चे ने तालाब में अपनी परछाईं को देखा, तब उसे महसूस हुआ कि वह भेड़ नहीं, शेर है। 

मैं आपको भी बताना चाहता हूं कि आप भेड़ नहीं, आप शेर हैं। जिस दिन आप अपनी असली परछाईं को पहचान लेंगे, उस दिन से आप भी जान जाएंगे कि आप भेड़ नहीं हैं। आप उसी तरीके से जीना सीखिए। भय से नहीं, निडर होकर। असलियत में जीना सीखिए। क्या आप इस सांस का आदर करते हैं?

वास्तव में आपके अंदर एक ऐसी चीज चल रही है, जिसके कारण आप जीवित हैं। उसने किसी के साथ भेदभाव नहीं किया है। वह एक ऐसी सच्चाई है, जिसको दुनिया का कोई भी झूठ बदल नहीं सकता। आपके अंदर है वह शक्ति, जिसके जाने से आप भी नहीं रहेंगे। जिस दिन आप उसे पहचान जाएंगे, उस दिन आप भी शेर बन जाएंगे। तब आप छोटी-छोटी बातों से घबरा नहीं जाएंगे। कठिन समय में अपने निर्णय लेने में आपको जरा भी परेशानी नहीं होगी।
