सिद्धांत शब्द का संधि विच्छेद है- सिद्ध +अंत। सार्वजनिक व सार्वभौमिक कल्याण कामना से जो भाव-विचार सिद्ध हों या जिस भाव-विचार की सिद्धि लोक कल्याण के लिए कार्यरूप में हो, वही सिद्धांत कहलाता है। व्यक्ति, समाज, राष्ट्र और समुदाय की सुख-शांति के लिए एक विचार प्रकट होता है। इस विचार में यदि वास्तव में सर्वसुख- शांति की शक्ति है और व्यावहारिक बनने पर यह विचार अपनी वैचारिक श्रेष्ठता बनाए रख सकता है तो यह सिद्धांत में बदल जाता है। इसी प्रकार के अनेक विचार अपनी-अपनी वैचारिकता और व्यावहारिकता के सामंजस्य से मानव उत्थान में जो योगदान देते हैं, उसी आधार पर वे सिद्धांत बनते हैं। चूंकि मानवीय जीवन चाहे-अनचाहे उत्तरोत्तर कल्याण, विकास की ही कामना रखता है इसीलिए सार्वभौमिक कल्याणकारी विचार और व्यवहार के फलस्वरूप जो सामाजिक सूचना प्रसारित होती है, वह धीरे-धीरे सर्वस्वीकार्य हो जाती है। इस तरह एक सिद्धांत उत्पन्न होता है। समझदार और प्रौढ़ व्यक्ति के जीवन में कुछ न कुछ सिद्धांत अवश्य होते हैं। सिद्धांत से तात्पर्य दैनिक वस्तुओं के उपभोग के नियम में बंधने से नहीं है। मनुष्य के भाव-विचार वास्तविक संसार के विषयों से अलग होकर व्यक्तिगत चेतना से संचालित होने चाहिए। ऐसा होने पर विषयों के प्रति आत्मिक दृष्टिकोण बनने लगता है। इसके बाद दुनियावी पूर्वाग्रह एक नई विचार-छलनी से छलने लगते हैं और इसमें से निकलकर जो नव विचार व्यक्ति को उचित लगते हैं, वे सिद्धांतों का रूप ग्रहण करते हैं। प्रत्येक विचार परोपकार की भावना से पोषित होना चाहिए। इस उपक्रम से सैद्धांतिक वातावरण बनने लगता है। मनुष्य अपने इष्टतम ज्ञान को पहचाने। यह तभी संभव है, जब उसके ज्ञान के सिद्धांत निर्धारित हों। इस दुनिया में सभी का जीवन निर्धारित समय तक ही है। मृत्यु के बाद लोग सशरीर पंचतत्वों में विलीन हो जाते हैं। यदि कोई अपनी मृत्यु के बाद इस संसार में कुछ छोड़ जाता है, तो वे उसके मौलिक व मानवीय सिद्धांत ही होते हैं। आध्यात्मिक दृष्टिकोण अपनाकर आसानी से समझा जा सकता है कि जीवन के बाद भी हमारी पहचान हमारे सकारात्मक और जीवन से संबंधित सिद्धांतों के बल पर ही हो सकती है।
