भगवान महावीर ने दास प्रथा, यज्ञों में पशु बलि, नारी की शोचनीय अवस्था की तरह जातिवाद पर भी कड़ा प्रहार किया था। उन्होंने उदात्त स्वर में उद्घोषित किया था कि मनुष्य कर्म से ही ब्राह्मण, क्षत्रिय, वैश्य और शूद्र होता है, जन्म से नहीं। यह प्रहार शब्दों तक सीमित नहीं था अपितु हरिकेशबल, अर्जुनमाली जैसे कथित निम्न वर्गीय व्यक्तियों को अपने धर्म-शासन में प्रवज्या देकर उन्होंने जातिवाद की जड़ों को उनके अंतिम अवशेषों तक खोद डाला। इतिहास उनके इस युगांतरकारी कदम का सदैव कृतज्ञ-साक्षी रहेगा। महावीर ने परंपरा के विरुद्ध जाकर अपने भिक्षुओं से कहा कि जैसा उपदेश कुलीनों को देते हो, वैसा ही अकुलीनों को दो। जैसा अकुलीनों को देते हो, वैसा कुलीनों को भी दो। 

उन्होंने अपने धर्म-शासन में कुलीनों और अकुलीनों को समान अधिकार ही नहीं दिया बल्कि इस सिद्धांत को भविष्य के लिए स्थापित भी किया। कुलीनता पर गर्व करने वालों पर इंगित कर कहा कि यह आत्मा अनेकशः श्रेष्ठ तथा हीन कुलों में जन्म ले चुकी है। श्रेष्ठ कुलों में जन्म लेने से वह श्रेष्ठ नहीं हो जाती और हीन कुल में जन्म लेने से वह हीन नहीं हो जाती है। महावीर के जीवन को देखें तो वे हर समय और हर जगह जातिवाद का व्यूह तोड़ते हुए ही मिलेंगे। उनकी यह स्पष्ट घोषणा है कि मानव की एक ही जाति है। महावीर और बुद्ध के ढाई हजार वर्ष तो दूर की बात है, हम सब महात्मा गांधी, भीमराव आंबेडकर और जयप्रकाश नारायण की मान्यताओं और योगदान को भी याद नहीं कर पा रहे हैं। जाने-अनजाने मनुष्यता विरोधी जिन विचारों को हवा दी जा रही है, उससे समाज और देश को बचाने की जरूरत है।

आज हम पर नए सिरे से एक समतामूलक समाज बनाने की जिम्मेदारी आ गई है। उसके पहले यह देखने का भी समय है कि वे महापुरुष कहां खड़े थे और हम कहां हैं। आज हम उनके नाम पर विशाल संस्थान जगह-जगह खड़े कर रहे हैं, लेकिन उनके विचारों को जीवन में शामिल नहीं कर, सिर्फ किताबों और फाइलों की शोभा ही बढ़ा रहे हैं। आज जरूरत है हम सभी उन महापुरुषों की बातो को अपने जीवन में उतारे।
