मनुष्य के मन में सुख पाने की अभिलाषा आरंभ से ही बनी हुई है। इस सुख प्राप्ति की चाह से प्रेरित होकर ही मनुष्य के जीवन में धर्म ने प्रवेश किया। धर्म की यह चाह मात्र मनुष्य में है, पशुओं में नहीं। यह चाह मनुष्य में है, इसीलिए उसे मनुष्य के नाम से जाना जाता है। मनुष्य, अर्थात जिनमें मन की प्रधानता है। इस सुख को पाने की प्रचेष्टा से ही धर्म की उत्पत्ति हुई है। 

मनुष्यों ने पाया कि वह जो कुछ पाते हैं, उसके बाद देखते हैं कि यह तो बहुत थोड़ा है। उन्हें तो इससे भी अधिक चाहिए। 

फिर जब वह भी मिल गया, तो फिर देखते हैं कि उन्हें वह भी थोड़ा लगा। फिर प्रयास करते हैं कि और चाहिए। कभी थोड़ी सी कुछ चीज मिल गई, जिससे उन्होंने सोचा था कि सुख की प्राप्ति होगी। उसके बाद उन्हें फिर चाह नहीं रहेगी। किंतु देखते हैं कि इसमें भी उनकी चाह नहीं मिटी। और चाहिए, और चाहिए। 

मनुष्य ने अंततः देखा कि उसे अनंत चाहिए। और जिसकी सीमाएं हैं, उससे उसे वह सुख नहीं मिला। मनुष्य फिर खोज में लग गया। तब उसे पता लगा कि बस एक ही सत्ता है, जो अनंत है। और वह है - परमपुरुष, ईश्वर। 

मनुष्य अगर वास्तव में सुखी होना चाहता है, तृप्ति चाहता है तो उसे परमपुरुष की खोज करनी होगी। सिवाय उनके कोई और वस्तु उन्हें तृप्ति नहीं दे सकती। 

इसी सुख प्राप्ति की चाह से धर्म-जीवन का प्रारंभ हुआ। यह जो परमपुरुष को पाने का प्रयास है और यह जो धर्म-साधना है, वह सबको करनी चाहिए। इसे करना ही मनुष्य की पहचान है। 

मनुष्य को यदि सही इंसान बनना है, मनुष्य बनना है, तो धर्म-जीवन में उसे आना ही है। मानव मन की यही विशेषता है कि अल्प से उसे संतोष नहीं मिलता। अनंत को ही वह चाहता है। सुख जहां अनंत तक पहुंच गया है, उस सुख को आनंद कहते हैं। अर्थात मनुष्य वास्तव में सुख नहीं चाहता। वह चाहता है आनंद। 

सुख प्राप्ति की चाह से प्रेरित होकर वह अनंत की राह अपनाता है। मनोवैज्ञानिक दृष्टि से देखा जाय तो सुख और आनंद में अंतर प्रतीत होगा। जब अनुभूति की तरंगें मन के भीतर रह गईं, तब उसे कहेंगे सुख। और जब तरंगें मन के भीतर में ही नहीं बल्कि बाहर भी आ गई हैं, अर्थात जब मनुष्य महसूस करता है कि सुख की तरंगें उसके अंदर भी हैं और दसों दिशाओं में भी हैं, तो उसे कहेंगे आनंद। उसके मन का जो सुख है, वह मन के अंदर सीमित नहीं रह पाता। 

सुख सीमित रहता है, किंतु कभी-कभी अधिक हो जाने से वह बाहर निकल पड़ता है। वास्तव में परमपुरुष हैं आनंद के आधार। इसलिए उनकी प्राप्ति से मनुष्य को परम आनंद मिलता है।
