सुख से प्यार और दुख से घृणा हमारी समस्याओं का कारण है. ..(Love and hate are suffering Cause of our problems. ..)

भगवान महावीर ध्यानस्थ थे। एक गोपाल आया और उनसे बोला, ‘रे श्रमण! जरा देखते रहना, मेरे बैल यहां चर रहे हैं। मैं अभी लौटकर आया।’ महावीर समाधि में थे। न उन्होंने गोपाल की बात सुनी और न ही बैलों की चोरी होते या उन्हें रस्सा तोड़कर कहीं जाते हुए देखा। गोपाल आया तो उसे वहां अपने बैल नहीं दिखे। उसने पूछा, ‘मेरे बैल कहां हैं?’

महावीर ध्यानस्थ ही रहे। उत्तर न पाकर बैलों के स्वामी ने कोप में भरकर कहा, ‘धूर्त, तुमने ही मेरे बैल चुराए हैं। यह सोचकर जैसे ही वह गोपाल रस्सी से महावीर को मारने को हुआ कि उधर देवराज इंद्र स्वर्ग से आ गए। इंद्र ने कहा, ‘सावधान, तुम जिसे चोर समझते हो, वह राजा सिद्धार्थ के वर्चस्वी राजकुमार वर्धमान हैं। इन्होंने श्रमणत्व को धारण किया है और तप तथा कठोर साधना करने के कारण महावीर हैं।’

अनजाने में हो रहे अपराध के लिए गोपाल तो क्षमा मांगकर चला गया, लेकिन इंद्र ने महावीर के पास ही उनकी तप साधना का प्रहरी बन रहने की अनुमति मांगी। महावीर ने सुना तो अवश्य, पर अभी तक वह अपने समाधि भाव में स्थिर थे। समाधि खोलकर बोले, ‘इंद्र! साधकों के इतिहास में यह न कभी हुआ है और न होगा कि मोक्ष या कैवल्य के लिए किसी दूसरे की सहायता ली जाए।’ उन्होंने इंद्र की भावना की सराहना तो की, पर विनीत भाव से सहायता लेने से मना कर दिया। महावीर के सामने दो चरित्र थे - गोपाल और इंद्र। दोनों को समत्व से देखते हुए उन्होंने न गोपाल के प्रति घृणा की और न ही इंद्र के प्रति राग दिखाया। सुख और दुख दोनों में एक समान रहनेवाला और संतुलन स्थापित करने वाला व्यक्ति नई ऊंचाइयां छूता है। हर इंसान सुख चाहता है। दुख कोई नहीं चाहता। वह दुख से डरता है। इसलिए दुख से छुटकारा पाने के लिए तरह-तरह के प्रयत्न करता है। सुख और दुख धूप-छाया की तरह सदा इंसान के साथ रहते हैं। जिंदगी में खट्ठे-मीठे पदार्थों के समान दोनों का स्वाद चखना होता है।

सुख-दुख के सहअस्तित्व को आज तक कोई मिटा नहीं सका है। जीवन की प्रतिमा को सुंदर बनाने में सुख और दुख आभूषण के समान हैं। 

मैक्सिम गोर्की ने कहा है कि खुशी जब हाथ में होती है तो छोटी लगती है। उसे एक बार छोड़कर देखो और एक पल में पता लग जाएगा कि यह कितनी बड़ी और खास है। वह इंसानी नजरिये को और स्पष्ट करते हुए कहते हैं कि एक दुखी आदमी दूसरे दुखी आदमी की तलाश में रहता है। उसके बाद ही वह खुश होता है। यही संकीर्ण दृष्टिकोण इंसान को वास्तविक सुख तक नहीं पहुंचने देता। हमें अपने अनंत शक्तिमय और आनंदमय स्वरूप को पहचानना चाहिए तथा आत्मविश्वास और उल्लास की ज्योति प्रज्ज्वलित करनी चाहिए। तभी सुख का साक्षात्कार संभव है।
