बनिये ने मना कर दिया क्योंकि उसने चार रुपए का सवा सेर गुड़ देकर खरीदा था। जौहरी ने सोचा कि इतनी जल्दी भी क्या है, कल आकर फिर कहूंगा, यदि नहीं मानेगा तो पांच रुपये देकर खरीद लूंगा। संयोग से दो घंटे बाद एक दूसरा जौहरी कुछ जरूरी सामान खरीदने उसी बनिए की दुकान पर आया। तराजू पर बंधे हीरे को देखकर वह चौंक गया। उसने सामान खरीदने के बजाए उस चमकीले पत्थर का दाम पूछ लिया। बनिए के मुख से पांच रुपये सुनते ही उसने झट जेब से निकालकर उसे पांच रुपये थमाए और हीरा लेकर खुशी-खुशी चल पड़ा।

दूसरे दिन वह पहले वाला जौहरी बनिए के पास आया। पांच रुपये थमाते हुए बोला - लाओ भाई दो वह पत्थर। बनिया बोला - वह तो कल ही एक दूसरा आदमी पांच रुपये में ले गया। यह सुनकर जौहरी ठगा सा महसूस करने लगा। अपना गम कम करने के लिए बनिए से बोला - अरे मूर्ख, वह साधारण पत्थर नहीं, एक लाख रुपये कीमत का हीरा था। बनिया बोला - मुझसे बड़े मूर्ख तो तुम हो। मेरी दृष्टि में तो वह साधारण पत्थर का टुकड़ा था, जिसकी कीमत मैंने सवा सेर गुड़ के बराबर चार रुपये दी थी। पर तुम जानते हुए भी एक लाख की कीमत का वह पत्थर, पांच रुपये में भी नहीं खरीद सके। 

बेशक जौहरी की नजर में बनिया अज्ञानी हो, पर उसने बहुत पते की बात कही। यह कहानी हम मनुष्यों पर भी चरितार्थ होती है। हमें हीरे से भी अनमोल जीवन मिला है। उसे हम इसे यूं ही न गंवा दें। अन्यथा अंतिम समय सिर धुन-धुन कर पछताने के सिवाय हमारे हाथ में कुछ नहीं रहेगा। समझदारी इसी में है कि हम अपने जीवन का मकसद जानें। उसे पूरा करें। अपने लिए सचेत होकर किसी सच्चे मार्गदर्शक की तलाश करें।
