यह सुनकर सम्राट क्रोध से तिलमिला उठा। उसके होठ फड़फड़ाने लगे। त्योरियां चढ़ गईं। आंखों से खून बरसने लगा। उसने तलवार निकालकर कहा, ‘तुम मुझे क्या नरक दिखाओगे, लो, मैं अभी तुम्हें नरक का मजा चखाता हूं। तुममें तो यह विवेक ही नहीं कि तुम किसके सामने क्या बोल रहे हो?’

संन्यासी हंस पड़ा। वह बोला, ‘सम्राट, नरक का साक्षात्कार हुआ या नहीं? तुम कहते हो मरने के बाद नरक का साक्षात्कार होता है, मैंने तुम्हें जीते जी नरक के दर्शन करा डाले। जब-जब व्यक्ति अति आवेश में होता है, तब -तब वह नरक का साक्षात्कार करता है।’ यह सुनते ही सम्राट संभल गया। वह सोच की गहराई में चला गया। पूर्ण शांत, उसने सोचा सचमुच संन्यासी ठीक कह रहा है। मैंने गलत किया। पहले मुझे सोचना चाहिए था कि वह मुझे भला-बुरा क्यों कह रहा है। मैं यूं ही क्रोध में भर गया। वह खेद प्रकट करने लगा। उसने नम्रता के साथ संन्यासी के चरण छुए। वह बोला,‘महाराज, क्षमा करें मैं भूल गया था। मैंने अपराध किया है।’ सम्राट के चेहरे पर शांति छा गई। जब उत्तेजना की तेजी के बाद शांति आती है तो वह और अच्छी होती है। उसके चेहरे पर सौजन्य और प्रेम का भाव छलकने लगा, विनय और श्रद्धा प्रकट हो गई। संन्यासी ने तत्काल कहा, ‘सम्राट, तुम स्वर्ग का साक्षात्कार करना चाहते थे। तुम्हारी वर्तमान की मनःस्थिति और भाव धारा साक्षात स्वर्ग है।’ सम्राट समझ गया। स्वर्ग और नरक कोई भौगोलिक परिवेश नहीं, बल्कि मन की अच्छी-बुरी परिणतियों के नाम हैं। मन की सकारात्मक परिणति स्वर्ग है और नकारात्मक परिणति नरक। हम ही स्वर्ग हैं और हम ही नरक। व्यक्ति जो अपने अंदर रखता है, वही अपने बाहर पाता है। भीतर स्वर्ग है तो बाहर स्वर्ग है और भीतर नरक हो तो बाहर भी नरक है। हमारा व्यवहार, हमारे कृत्य और हमारी सोच ही वास्तविक रूप में स्वर्ग और नरक हैं।
