कार्ली टैकास अक्सर ओलिंपिक में भाग लेने के स्वप्न देखता और दिन-रात निशानेबाजी का अभ्यास करता रहता था। एक समय ऐसा भी आया कि हंगरी में उसे सर्वश्रेष्ठ निशानेबाज घोषित किया गया। उसकी खुशी तब और बढ़ गई जब जापान में होने वाले ओलिंपिक खेलों में सम्मिलित होने के लिए उसे चुन लिया गया। कार्ली को लगा कि बस अब उसका सपना पूरा होने को है। लेकिन उसकी यह खुशी अधिक दिन तक नहीं टिक पाई। अचानक द्वितीय विश्व युद्ध छिड़ गया। उसे युद्ध के लिए जाना पड़ा। 1945 में युद्ध समाप्त हुआ और 1948 में होने वाले ओलिंपिक की तैयारियां शुरू हो गईं। ओलिंपिक में चयनित खिलाड़ी कड़ा परिश्रम कर रहे थे। दुर्भाग्यवश एक मोटर दुर्घटना में कार्ली अपना दाहिना हाथ खो बैठा और बेहोश हो गया। उसे लगने लगा कि जीवन का अब कोई अर्थ नहीं रह गया था। उसे अपनी सारी आशाएं धूमिल होती नजर आने लगीं, लेकिन उसने हिम्मत से काम लिया। वह दिन-रात बाएं हाथ से निशानेबाजी का अभ्यास करता रहता। उसके दिमाग में बस एक ही धुन थी कि ओलंपिक विजेता बनना है। सन 1948 में वह लंदन में ओलिंपिक खेलों में शामिल हुआ। जब लोगों को यह पता चला कि निशानेबाजी में प्रथम आए खिलाड़ी का दायां हाथ नहीं है तो उनके आश्चर्य का ठिकाना नहीं रहा। दर्शक इस ओलिंपिक विजेता अद्भुत खिलाड़ी को देखने के लिए उमड़ पड़े। बाएं हाथ से ओलिंपिक विजेता निशानेबाज बनकर कार्ली टैकास ने यह साबित कर दिया कि यदि सच्ची लगन होे तो कोई भी बाधा उसे सफलता हासिल करने से नहीं रोक सकती।
