राम के जीवन पर गौर करें तो पाएंगे कि वह मुसीबतों का एक अंतहीन सिलसिला था। सबसे पहले उन्हें राजपाट छोड़ना पड़ा। उसके बाद 14 साल वनवास झेलना पड़ा। राम का महत्व इसलिए नहीं है कि उन्होंने जीवन में इतनी मुश्किलें झेलीं, बल्कि इसलिए है कि उन्होंने उन तमाम मुश्किलों का सामना बहुत शिष्टता के साथ किया। उनकी पत्नी का अपहरण कर लिया गया। उसे छुड़ाने के लिए उन्हें अपनी इच्छा के खिलाफ एक भयानक युद्ध में उतरना पड़ा। जब वह पत्नी को लेकर अपने राज्य लौटे तो उन्हें आलोचना सुनने को मिली। इस पर उन्हें अपनी मां बनने वाली पत्नी को छोड़ना पड़ा। फिर उन्हें जाने-अनजाने अपने ही बच्चों के खिलाफ लड़ाई लड़नी पड़ी। अंत में वह हमेशा के लिए अपनी पत्नी से जुदा हो गए। राम में यह देखने की क्षमता थी कि जीवन में बाहरी परिस्थितियां कभी भी बिगड़ सकती हैं। तमाम व्यवस्था के बावजूद बाहरी परिस्थितियां विरोधी हो सकती हैं। इसीलिए अपने सबसे मुश्किल क्षणों में भी उन्होंने खुद को गरिमापूर्ण बनाए रखा। 

आप सोचते हैं कि मेरे साथ ये सब नहीं होगा, तो यह मूर्खता है। जीने का विवेकपूर्ण तरीका यही होगा कि आप सोचें, 'अगर मेरे साथ ऐसा होता है तो मैं इसे शिष्टता से ही निपटूंगा।' भगवान राम ऐसी परिस्थितियों में भी न तो क्रोधित हुए, न उन्होंने किसी को कोसा और न ही घबराए या उत्तेजित हुए। हर स्थिति को उन्होंने बहुत ही मर्यादित तरीके से संभाला। इसलिए जो लोग मुक्ति और गरिमापूर्ण जीवन की इच्छा रखते हैं, उन्हें राम की शरण लेनी चाहिए।

सवाल यह नहीं है कि आपके पास कितना है, आपने क्या किया, आपके साथ क्या हुआ और क्या नहीं। असल चीज है- जो भी हुआ, उसके साथ आपने खुद को कैसे संचालित किया। लोगों ने राम को पसंद किया क्योंकि उन्होंने राम के व्यवहार में पाई जाने वाली सूझबूझ को समझा। आध्यात्मिक मार्ग पर चलने वाले अनेक लोगों में अक्सर जीवन में किसी त्रासदी की कामना करने का रिवाज देखा गया है। वे चाहते हैं कि उनके जीवन में कोई ऐसी दुर्घटना हो, ताकि मृत्यु आने से पहले वे अपनी सहने की क्षमता को तौल सकें।

सब कुछ ठीक-ठाक चल रहा है और आपको पता चले कि जिसे आप हकीकत मान रहे हैं, वो आप के हाथों से छूट रहा है तो आपका खुद पर से नियंत्रण छूटने लगता है। इसलिए लोग त्रासदी की कामना करते हैं। राम की पूजा इसलिए नहीं की जाती कि हमारी भौतिक इच्छाएं पूरी हो जाएं। राम की पूजा हम उनसे यह प्रेरणा लेने के लिए करते हैं कि कठिन क्षणों का सामना कैसे धैर्यपूर्वक, बिना विचलित हुए किया जाए।
