धर्म सफल और सार्थक जीवन का आधार है। यह सिर पर धारण करने वाली पगड़ी नहीं, जिसे घर से दुकान के लिए चले तो पहन लिया और दुकान पर जाकर उतार कर रख दिया। धर्म तो आत्मा का स्वभाव है। धर्म के मायने प्रेम, करुणा और सद्भावना है। उसका प्रतीक फिर चाहे राम हों, रहीम, बुद्ध हों या महावीर, कृष्ण हों या फिर मोहम्मद साहब। धर्म दीवार नहीं, द्वार है, लेकिन दीवार जब धर्म बन जाती है तो अन्याय और अत्याचार को खुलकर खेलने का अवसर मिल जाता है। फिर चाहे वह दीवार मंदिर की हो या मस्जिद की क्यों न हो? सभी धर्मो का प्रस्थान बिंदु एक है-वह है मानवीय एकता और आध्यात्मिकता, जो हर व्यक्ति को शारीरिक, मानसिक और आध्यात्मिक उन्नति के साथ समाज को सर्वागीण उन्नति की पृष्ठभूमि प्रदान करे।  मनुष्य जिस आदर्श समाज के लिए तरस रहा है, वह मनुष्य-स्वभाव को अध्यात्म की दिशा में मोड़े बिना संभव नहीं है। अध्यात्म की भूमिका में ही सत्य, न्याय, क्षमा, आत्मसंयम, संवेदनशीलता और स्वार्थ व त्याग जैसे जीवन मूल्य पनपते हैं। धर्म का अर्थ है वैज्ञानिक आधार पर जीवन और जगत के सूक्ष्म रहस्यों को समझना। पूर्ण पुरुषों, ज्ञानीजनों और शास्त्रों द्वारा निर्धारित नियमों का पालन करना। देश का अच्छा नागरिक वह है जो शासन को समझता है और शासन के नियमों का पालन करता है। जो अच्छा नागरिक बनता है वह सहज ही धार्मिक बन जाता है। व्यक्तिगत विकास, परिवार की सुसंस्कारिता और अच्छे समाज की संरचना ये सब धर्म के ही मधुर फल हैं। धर्म के मौलिक तत्व एक जैसे होते हुए भी धर्म की जमीन में कुछ ऐसे कीटाणु लग गए हैं जो समाज में विषवृक्ष उत्पन्न कर रहे हैं। इस दृष्टि से कभी-कभी पूजा-स्थलों, धार्मिक पहचान के चिह्नें और पंडा-पुजारियों की भूमिका भी विवादास्पद बन जाती है। संवादहीनता, संवेदनशीलता की कमी, भय, असुरक्षा की भावना, पहचान का संकट-इन कारणों से भी विभिन्न धर्म-समुदाय परस्पर संघर्ष में उतर जाते हैं। यह दोष धर्म के मूल तत्वों का नहीं, बल्कि संगठित धर्मो की विवादास्पद भूमिका से संबंधित है। वस्तुत: एक साथ बैठकर परमात्मा का स्मरण, तत्व-चिंतन, आत्म-निरीक्षण, कल्याणकारी योजनाओं का निर्धारण-क्रियान्वयन आदि कारणों-प्रयोजनों से धर्म स्थल बने, पर मजहबी कट्टरता और धार्मिक असहिष्णुता के कारण वे विवादों का केंद्र बन चुके हैं।
