जीवन युगों बाद भी एक अनबूझ पहेली बना हुआ है। कुछ शाश्वत प्रश्न हैं कि जीवन का लक्ष्य क्या है? इसकी सफलता को कैसे परिभाषित किया जाए? सफलता के सूत्र क्या हैं? समय-समय पर जीवन के प्रति दृष्टिकोण भी परिवर्तित और संशोधित होता रहा है। इसे अध्यात्म के तल पर ही नहीं भौतिक और सामाजिक मानदंडों पर भी कसा जाता रहा है। वर्तमान परिप्रेक्ष्य में संसाधनों और अधिकारों के भंवर से उपलब्धियों के बिंदु उदित हो रहे हैं और इन्हें पूर्णत: व्यावसायिक गणित की तरह लिया जा रहा है। जीवन को गणित बनाकर उसे कतिपय सूत्रों से जोड़ दिया गया है, जिनमें सर्वाधिक प्रिय सूत्र के रूप में सकारात्मकता की अवधारणा की चर्चा है। ठीक है कि मनुष्य को जीवन में कभी हार नहीं माननी चाहिए और सदैव अपने लक्ष्यों के प्रति प्रयत्नशील रहना चाहिए, किंतु कोरा आशावाद कि मनवांछित प्राप्त हो जाएगा, प्राय: निराशा में परिवर्तित होता है, जो अधिक दुख देता है। मनुष्य की इच्छाशक्ति महत्वपूर्ण है, किंतु मात्र इच्छाशक्ति फलदायी नहीं होती। जीवन के यथार्थ को समझे बगैर जीवन का लक्ष्य समझ से परे और अप्राप्य रहता है। किसी ने धन, संपत्ति को और किसी ने शक्ति और पद को या कुल, जाति, शोहरत और विद्वता को अपना उद्देश्य बना लिया और इसे हासिल भी कर लिया। फिर भी जीवन में क्षोभ और असंतुष्टि कायम है। यह क्षोभ प्रतिस्पर्धा के कारण भी हो सकता है, उपलब्धि के स्थायित्व की चिंता में, विरोधियों के षड्यंत्रों और परिस्थितियों के परिवर्तन के कारण भी होता है।  जो प्राप्त हो गया है, वह स्थायी भी रहने वाला हो, किंतु शंकाएं सदैव व्यथित करती रहती हैं। शंकाओं का आधार इसलिए होता है, क्योंकि मनुष्य स्वयं ही यह आश्वस्त नहीं होता कि उसने अंतिम लक्ष्य को पा लिया। अपने गंतव्य तक पहुंच गया है। मनुष्य की कामनाएं और लोभ उसे सदैव संतोष से वंचित करते रहते हैं। कामनाएं, सकारात्मक प्रयासों के लिए प्रेरित तो कर सकती है, किंतु निश्चिंतता और संतुष्टि नहीं दे सकतीं। जीवन आशावाद के आकाश में नहीं यथार्थ के कठोर धरातल पर खड़ा है। जीवन के बहुआयामी कैनवास पर सुख और दुख दोनों हैं। यश भी है अपयश भी, सहायता है, साथ ही प्रतिरोध है। जीवन सदैव सुखों की बरसात नहीं करता और न ही सदैव दुख देता है।
