पानी बचाओ-बिजली बचाओ का नारा मितव्ययता से सफल होगा ....

गांधी जी के विचारों पर जैन धर्म का गहरा प्रभाव था। संयम प्रधान आदर्शों का उन्होंने अत्यंत श्रद्धा और निष्ठा से अनुसरण किया था। किसी भी वस्तु का आवश्यकता से अधिक उपयोग करना वे उचित नहीं समझते थे। आश्रमवासी कार्यकर्ताओं द्वारा जरा भी अपव्यय उन्हें सहन नहीं होता था।

एक दिन जवाहरलाल नेहरू आश्रम में उनसे मिलने आए। उनसे वार्तालाप करते समय गांधीजी से कुल्ले में अधिक पानी का उपयोग हो गया। उन्होंने पंडितजी के समक्ष इसका अफसोस प्रकट किया। पंडितजी ने कहा-‘आश्रम के पास नदी बह रही है। आप इतने से पानी के लिए क्या विचार करते हैं/’ गांधीजी ने कहा- ‘देश में पानी की बहुत समस्या हैं, हमें एक-एक बूंद का उपयोग सावधानी से करना चाहिए। यह नदी मेरे लिए ही नहीं बहती, समस्त देशवासियों का इसके पानी पर अधिकार है।’ पंडितजी इन विचारों से बहुत प्रभावित हुए।

एक बार गांधीजी मुंबई के किसी स्कूल में ठहरे हुए थे। उन्हें सरदार पटेल के साथ कार्यक्रम में जाना था। पटेल तैयार हो गए पर गांधीजी इधर-उधर कुछ टटोल रहे थे। पटेल ने कहा- महात्माजी, कार्यक्रम का समय हो गया है। हमें जल्दी चलना चाहिए। गांधीजी ने कहा- एक छोटी पेंसिल गुम हो गई है। पटेल ने कहा- आपके लिए पेंसिलों की कोई कमी नहीं, आप इतना क्या विचार करते हैं/ गांधीजी ने कहा- केरल के एक विद्यार्थी ने मुझे बहुत भावना से वह पेंसिल भेंट की थी। यदि मैं प्राप्त वस्तुओं का ध्यान नहीं रखूंगा तो देने वालों के साथ धोखा करूंगा। पटेल के पास इसका कोई उत्तर नहीं था। वह बापू के विचारों के आगे नतमस्तक हो गए। विद्यार्थी जीवन से ही ऐसे संस्कारों का सिंचन हो तो राष्ट्र का कायाकल्प हो सकता है। प्रसिद्ध संत जॉन मुरैनी रात के समय लिख रहे थे। उनके पास दो दीपक जल रहे थे। तभी कुछ जिज्ञासु उनसे मिलने आए। उनके बैठते ही संत ने एक दिया बुझा दिया। उन्होंने संत से पूछा- आपने ऐसा क्यों किया/ मुरैनी ने कहा- लिखने के लिए अधिक उजाले की आवश्यकता होती है। ज्ञान-चर्चा तो थोड़ी रोशनी में भी हो जाएगी। 

आज पानी और बिजली के अभाव की चर्चा सारे राष्ट्र में हो रही है, पर सड़कों पर जगह-जगह नल खुले पड़े रहते हैं। इस दिशा में सरकार और जनता दोनों में ही जागरूकता का अभाव है। इसी प्रकार बिजली का भी दुरुपयोग होता रहता है। जॉन मुरैनी ने कहा था- ‘यदि मेरा बस चलता तो मैं बड़े अक्षरों में आकाश में चारों ओर लिखा देता- मितव्ययता-मितव्ययता।’ जब तक जन-जन को संयमप्रधान जीवनशैली का व्यवस्थित प्रशिक्षण नहीं दिया जाएगा, तब तक सुधार नहीं हो पाएगा।
