राजा ने भक्तिभाव से ब्राह्मणों को भोज कराया। रसोइयों ने भोजन बनाने में कोई कमी नहीं रहने दी। चील ने भूख शांत करने के लिए सांप का शिकार किया। छटपटाते सांप के मुंह से विष गिरने पर भला किसका वश था! यमराज ने बात टाल दी। 

इस घटना के एक साल बाद पड़ोसी राज्य के कुछ ब्राह्मण उस राजा के महल के पास से गुजरे। वे भूखे और थके हुए थे। दान-पुण्य को लेकर राजा की ख्याति से वे परिचित थे। उनमें से एक ने कहा,‘चलो, आज हम भी राजमहल के आतिथ्य का सुख भोगते हैं।’ तभी वहां से एक स्त्री गुजरी। उस ब्राह्मण की बात सुन वह तुरंत बोली,‘यह गलती न करें। शायद आपने सुना नहीं, पिछले साल राजा ने भोजन में विष मिलवा कर कई ब्राह्मणों की एक साथ हत्या कर दी थी।’ यह सुनते ही मृत्युलोक में बैठे यमराज के चेहरे पर मुस्कान दौड़ गई। उन्होंने चित्रगुप्त को आदेश दिया, ‘उन ब्राह्मणों की हत्या का दोष इस स्त्री के लेखे-जोखे में लिख दो।’ चित्रगुप्त हक्के-बक्के रह गए। उनकी शंका को शांत करते हुए यमराज बोले,‘ उस दिन जो कुछ घटा, वह बस एक दुर्घटना थी, जिसमें किसी का दोष न था। लेकिन बिना सच जाने, जिस प्रकार इस स्त्री ने फैसला सुनाते हुए राजा पर दोष मढ़ा, इस कारण इस प्रकरण में वही सबसे बड़ी पापिन है। उसे इसकी सजा मिलनी चाहिए।’
