आमतौर पर जब किसी नास्तिक की मुलाकात आस्तिक से होती है, तो नास्तिक का पहला सवाल आस्तिक से यही होता है- अगर परमात्मा में विश्वास करते हैं, तो क्या कभी उससे साक्षात्कार हुआ है? आम लोगों में यह धारणा है कि परमेश्वर किसी अवतारी पुरुष की भांति अपने चमत्कारिक क्रिया-कलापों से अपनी उपस्थिति दर्ज कराता है। असलियत में परमात्मा सार्वकालिक, सर्वव्यापक व सर्वज्ञाता है। 

परमात्मा का सौंदर्य प्रकृति में समाया हुआ है। अवतारी पुरुष कोई बड़ा समाज-सुधारक हो सकता है। यह भी संभव है कि परमात्मा के अनुपम सौंदर्य की किंचित झलक उस अवतारी पुरुष में नजर भी आ जाए, किंतु किसी भी अवतारी पुरुष को साक्षात परमात्मा घोषित करना विशुद्ध अध्यात्म के संदर्भ में तर्कसंगत नहीं है। हम बुद्धि के तल पर यह समझते हैं कि परमात्मा एक खोज है, गंभीर शोध है। वास्तव में परमात्मा एक गंभीर शोध तब तक है, जब तक हमारी आत्मा पर पड़ा तर्क-वितर्क का आवरण उसके अद्वितीय सौंदर्य को पहचानने में हमें असमर्थ बनाए रखता है। 

सचाई यह है कि परमात्मा भी हमें खोज रहा है। कभी-कभी वह अनायास ही हमें अपने अद्भुत सौंदर्य के रसास्वादन से भिगो देता है, किंतु हमारे चित्त की गहराई में जो तर्कजाल फैला है, जो क्लिष्ट धार्मिक-सिद्धांत शास्त्रों ने खड़े कर रखे हैं, उनके फलस्वरूप परमात्मा के सौंदर्य से अंततः हम वंचित रह जाते हैं। परमात्मा का यह अद्भुत सौंदर्य उस क्षण मूर्त रूप लेकर जीवंत हो उठता है, जब किसी दिन पूर्णिमा की चांदनी में आप चांद को देखकर ठहर जाते हैं, किसी अबोध बालक की निश्छल मुस्कराहट देखकर भीतर तक रोमांचित हो उठते हैं, या किसी अनाथ को भरपेट भोजन खिलाते-खिलाते आपकी आंखों से प्रेम और वात्सल्य की अश्रुधारा बहने लगती है। 

सच पूछें तो परमात्मा का सौंदर्य अकस्मात घटित होता है। एक बार रामकृष्ण परमहंस को परमात्मा के सौंदर्य की झलक दिखी और वह अनायास ही समाधिस्थ हो गए। तब रामकृष्ण की उम्र नौ-दस साल की थी। वह अपने खेत से लौट रहे थे। रास्ते में तालाब के किनारे से निकलते वक्त उनके पैरों की आहट सुनकर किनारे बैठे बगुले उड़ गए। दस-पंद्रह सफेद बगुलों की कतार और पीछे एक काला बादल। 

यह देख रामकृष्ण वहीं ठिठक गए और इतने अभिभूत हुए कि समाधिस्थ होकर वहीं गिर पड़े। जब रामकृष्ण और समझदार हुए तो उन्होंने अपने साथियों को बताया कि काले बादल के बीच सफेद बगुलों की कतार देखकर मेरे भीतर बिजली-सी कौंध गई। उस दृश्य को देखकर मुझे अपूर्व आनंद का एहसास हुआ। रामकृष्ण परमहंस ने कहा, असलियत में यह आनंद का एहसास ही परमात्मा के सौंदर्य की एक झलक थी। समाधि की एक घटना थी।
