एक गांव में जमींदार और उसके एक मजदूर की साथ ही मौत हुई। दोनों यमलोक पहुंचे। धर्मराज ने जमींदार से कहा, ‘आज से तुम मजदूर की सेवा करोगे।’ मजदूर से कहा, ‘अब तुम कोई काम नहीं करोगे, आराम से यहां रहोगे।’ जमींदार परेशान हो गया। पृथ्वी पर तो मजदूर जमींदार की सेवा करता था, पर अब उलटा होने वाला था। जमींदार ने कहा, ‘भगवन, आप ने मुझे यह सजा क्यों दी? मैं तो भगवान का परम भक्त हूं। प्रतिदिन मंदिर जाता था। देसी घी से भगवान की आरती करता था और बहुमूल्य चीजें दान करता था। धर्म के अन्य आयोजन भी मैं करता ही रहता था।’ धर्मराज ने मजदूर से पूछा, ‘तुम क्या करते थे पृथ्वी पर?’ मजदूर ने कहा, ‘भगवन, मैं गरीब मजदूर था। दिन भर जमींदार के खेत में मेहनत मजदूरी करता था। मजदूरी में उनके यहां से जितना मिलता था, उसी में परिवार के साथ गुजारा करता था। मोह माया से दूर जब समय मिलता था तब भगवान को याद कर लेता था। भगवान से कभी कुछ मांगा नहीं। गरीबी के कारण प्रतिदिन मंदिर में आरती तो नहीं कर पाता था, लेकिन जब घर में तेल होता तब मंदिर में आरती करता था और आरती के बाद दीपक को अंधेरी गली में रख देता था ताकि अंधेरे में आने-जाने वाले लोगों को प्रकाश मिले।’ धर्मराज ने जमींदार से कहा, ‘आपने सुन ली न मजदूर की बात? भगवान धन-दौलत और अहंकार से खुश नहीं होते। भगवान मेहनत और ईमानदारी से कमाने वाले व्यक्ति से प्रसन्न रहते हैं। यह मजदूर तुम्हारे खेतों में काम करके खुश रहता था और सच्चे मन से भगवान की आराधना करता था। जबकि तुम आराधना ज्यादा धन पाने के लिए करते थे। तुम मजदूरों से ज्यादा काम लेकर कम मजदूरी देते थे। तुम्हारे इन्हीं कामों के कारण तुम्हें मजदूर का नौकर बनाया गया है ताकि तुम भी एक नौकर के दुख-दर्द को समझ सको।’
