जब मनुष्य जन्म लेता है तो तो बड़ा होते-होते उस पर पांच प्रकार के ऋण आ जाते हैं। उनमें से एक ऋण राजा का होता है। आज के जमाने में राज्य का स्वरूप बदल गया है और अब राजा नहीं होता, उसकी जगह हमारी ही चुनी हुई सरकार ने ले ली है, इसलिए राजा का यह ऋण हम सरकार को ही टैक्स देकर चुकाते हैं। इसके बदले में सरकार हमें विभिन्न प्रकार के साधन मुहैया करवाती है ताकि हम अपना जीवन सुचारू रूप से चला सकें। इस्कॉन के संस्थापक श्री भक्ति वेदांत स्वामी महाराजजी बताते हैं कि हमें इन साधनों का उपयोग अपनी आवश्यकता के अनुसार करना चाहिए। यदि हम इनका जरूरत से ज्यादा उपयोग करते हैं तो यह पाप है। 

दुर्भाग्यवश प्रत्येक मनुष्य विजयी होने, अमीर होने, बड़ा होने का प्रयास कर रहा है। अनावश्यक धन-संपत्ति, जमीन इत्यादि पर अधिकार जताते हुए जब हम लड़ते हैं या गलत कार्य करते हैं तो जरा भी नहीं सोचते कि यह सब अंत में छोड़कर जाना होगा। और तो और, हम यह भी नहीं याद रखते कि हमारे अंदर बैठे परमात्मा सब कुछ देख रहे हैं। हमें यह भी समझना चाहिए कि यह सब हमारी नहीं बल्कि ईश्वर की संपत्ति है। 

अगर हम एक बोरा अनाज सड़क पर बिखेर दें तो कबूतर आकर उसमें से दो-चार दाने चुग कर चले जाएंगे। वे आवश्यकता से अधिक ग्रहण नहीं करेंगे। यदि हम सड़क के किनारे आटे के अनेक बोरे रखकर लोगों से कहें कि आओ और ले जाओ तो एक व्यक्ति दस-बीस बोरे लेकर जाएगा और दूसरा पंद्रह-बीस लेकर जाएगा। जिसमें जितना लूटने की सोच है, क्षमता है, वह उतना लेकर जाने की चेष्टा अवश्य करेगा। क्या इस प्रकार हो जाने से वितरण असमान नहीं होगा?

प्रत्येक वस्तु परमेश्वर की है और हम उतना ही ले सकते हैं जितने की आवश्यकता है। भगवान ने संसार की ऐसी व्यवस्था कर रखी है कि इसमें प्रत्येक वस्तु पर्याप्त है। हर कोई अगर अपनी जरूरत के मुताबिक ले तो किसी के लिए इन वस्तुओं की किल्लत नहीं होगी। लेकिन आज कोई भी खुद को अपनी जरूरतों तक सीमित रखने को तैयार नहीं। जिसे मौका मिलता है वही अपनी क्षमता के मुताबिक अधिक से अधिक बटोर लेने की कोशिश करता है। इसी वजह से आज यह स्थिति है कि किसी के पास आवश्यकता से अधिक पड़ा है तो कोई भूखों मर रहा है। 

वास्तव में ज्ञान के अभाव से ही हम कष्ट भोग रहे हैं। न्यायालय में अज्ञान के लिए कोई जगह नहीं होती। यदि किसी ने अवैधानिक रीति से प्रचुर संपत्ति एकत्रित कर ली है और नियम के उल्लंघन से अज्ञानता प्रकट करता है तो भी वह दंडनीय है। दुनियावी न्यायालय में इसे अपराध कहते हैं और इसका दंड निर्धारित है। इसी प्रकार सर्वोच्च अदालत अर्थात भगवान की दृष्टि में भी यह सही नहीं है।
