सर्कस का कमजोर-सा दिखने वाला रिंग मास्टर अनेक हाथियों और सिंहों से करतब कराता है। एक तरह से उन पर शासन करता है। उसे देखकर लगता है कि वह सचमुच बलवान है। लेकिन वही जब अकेले में होता है, तब उसे बड़ी पीड़ा होती है कि सर्कस के मैदान में तो हाथियों को वश में रखता हूं, सिंह पर शासन करता हूं, किंतु व्यक्तिगत जीवन में मन की किसी धारा के साथ बह जाता हूं। मन मुझे पराजित कर देता है।

हम बहुत बड़े विजेता हो सकते हैं, पर अपने मन के सामने अवश हैं। इसीलिए उपनिषदों में विजयी उसे माना गया है जो आत्मविजय कर ले। आपने देखा होगा कि किसी बड़े सम्मेलन, यज्ञ या आयोजन में दीप जलाया जाता है। आयोजकों को यह चिंता रहती है कि दीप न बुझे और उसका प्रकाश भी बाहर जाता रहे। 

इसी प्रकार अंतस के प्रज्वलित दीप को भी यदि विषय-बयार के झोंकों से बचा लिया जाए तो माया के अंधकार में हमें भी सदा रोशनी मिलती रहेगी। सच्चे साधु व संत अपने वचनों और आशीर्वाद से हमें वही कवच प्रदान करते हैं। इस संसार में पग-पग पर छल और बल से उस दीप को बुझाने का प्रयत्न होता है। यदि चेतना और विवेक का वह दीप बुझ गया तो हम अंधकार में भटक जाएंगे। माया-मोह से सांसारिक जाल के सामने पराजित हो जाते हैं। मनुष्य में यह क्षमता है कि वह अपने दीप को बुझने से बचाने का भरसक प्रयत्न करता है। यमराज के द्वार पर नचिकेता बनकर प्रश्न करने का यही अर्थ है। यदि विवेक दीप जल रहा हो तो इंसान नचिकेता-भाव से यमराज से भी अपने प्रश्नों का उत्तर पा सकता है।

पूजा में दीपक का प्रयोग अकारण शुरू नहीं हुआ। नन्हा दीपक सबसे बड़ा गुरु है। वह हम सबको सिखाता है- देखो, मैं माटी का ही दीप हूं। जिसे तुम सबसे तुच्छ समझते हो। तुम भी माटी के ही दीप हो। इसलिए प्रकाशित होकर धरती पर रहना। हम सब मिट्टी के बने हैं। मिट्टी से बने पदार्थों की उम्र कम होती है। क्या पता, किस घड़ी यह जीवन समाप्त हो जाए। इसलिए जब तक जीवन है, सदा जलना है और रोशनी फैलाना है।

मिट्टी का दीप बताता है- मैं बहुत छोटा हूं। तुम कुछ बड़े हो मुझसे। लेकिन मैं केवल इसीलिए जलता हूं कि मेरा छोटा-सा प्रकाश किसी को राह दिखा सके, प्रेरणा दे सके। इतना हो जाए तो मेरा जलना सार्थक हो जाए। दीपक हमें अपने कर्तव्य का पालन करने की शिक्षा देता है। उससे हमें अविरल संघर्ष की प्रेरणा मिलती है।
