सेवा मानव-हृदय के भीतर उत्पन्न होने वाला वह मिशनरी भाव है, जिसका आविर्भाव, स्वहित की अपेक्षा लोकहित के उद्देश्य से निस्वार्थ रूप से हृदय-कमल में होता है। सेवा का उद्देश्य पाना नहीं, बल्कि प्राण-पण से अपना इष्टतम अपने आराध्य या अभीष्ट को समर्पित करना है। इसका पारितोषिक भौतिक नहीं, बल्कि अभौतिक और अनुभूतिपरक होता है। सेवा शाश्वत आनंद प्रदान करने वाली अनमोल और कभी न समाप्त होने वाली आंतरिक खुशी प्रदान करती है। सेवा से हृदय सर्वथा प्रफुल्लित और आनंदित रहता है। दूसरे अर्थो में सेवा से मिलने वाले सुख और आनंद की प्राप्ति का स्थान संसार का कोई भी भौतिक सुख या उपलब्धि नहीं ले सकता। नौकरी भी किन्हीं अर्थो में सेवा की ही अनुगामिनी या सहचर है, किंतु इससे मिलने वाला पारितोषिक भौतिक रूप में उपस्थित होकर क्षणिक सुख की सृष्टि रचता है और दूसरे ही क्षण इसकी प्राप्ति से अतृप्ति, असंतोष, निराशा, घृणा, पश्चाताप, चंचलता, अरुचि और अन्यान्य नकारात्मक भाव पैदा होने लग जाते हैं।  नौकरी भौतिक उन्नति या प्राप्ति की प्रत्याशा से किया जाने वाला कार्य है, जिसमें समर्पण, अपनत्व, श्रद्धा और सेवा से कहीं अधिक स्वार्थपरायणता, भौतिक प्राप्ति की उत्कंठा या जिज्ञासा समाहित रहती है। नौकरी से मिलने वाले पारितोषिक से जीवन की खुशी का ग्राफ ऊपर-नीचे होकर मन को उसी अनुपात में सुख-दुख; खुशी-पश्चाताप का सुफल या कुफल देकर उद्वेलित-आंदोलित करता रहता है, लेकिन सेवा का पारितोषिक सदैव मन की जीर्ण-शीर्ण कुटिया को हरी-भरी कर सुख, आनंद और खुशी को बहुगुणित हर्षित-प्रफुल्लित रखता है। भौतिकता केंद्रित नौकरी संसार के भवसागर में गोते खाने के लिए बाध्य करती रहती है, जबकि स्वार्थरहित सेवा ईश्वर के साम्राज्य का राही बनाकर अलौकिक सुख और आनंद के लोक का मार्ग प्रशस्त करती है। सेवा ईश्वर का स्थायी सानिध्य पाने का आनंददायी मार्ग है। वहीं नौकरी स्वयं की प्रतिभा को भौतिक इच्छाओं को पूरा करने का साधन मात्र है। सच्ची सेवा, स्वयं के इस भौतिक अभिनय से जन्म-जन्मांतरों के बंधनों को काटकर, ईश्वर के साथ तादात्म्य स्थापित करने का एक स्थायी प्रमाण पत्र है।
