सिद्धांतों की चर्चा से नहीं, अच्छे व्यवहार से आती है खुशहाली ..(No discussion of the principles of good Happiness comes from practice...)

एक बार गुरु नानक एक बड़ी रियासत में पहुंचे। वहां का राजा हर समय धन प्राप्त करने की युक्तियों में लगा रहता था। राजमहल में प्रवेश करने से पहले गुरुजी ने कुछ कंकड़-पत्थर बीन कर अपनी मुट्ठियों में दबा लिए। राजा उन्हें उदारतापूर्वक महल में ले गया। गुरुजी आसन पर बैठ ही रहे थे कि उनकी मुट्ठी से छिटक कर दो-तीन कंकड़ गिर गए। राजा ने आश्चर्य से पूछा,‘यह कंकड़-पत्थर आपने क्यों इकट्ठा कर रखे हैं?’

गुरुजी बोले,‘राजन, मरने के बाद मैं इन्हें साथ लेकर जाऊंगा और ईश्वर को उपहार दूंगा।’ राजा जोर से हंसा और बोला,‘आप जैसा परम ज्ञानी भी मरने के बाद कुछ ले जाने की बात सोचता है। क्या आप भूल गए कि आत्मा अपने साथ कुछ नहीं ले जा सकती?’ यह सुन कर नानकजी हंसने लगे क्योंकि सत्य को जानने वाला राजा मूर्खतावश उसे जी नहीं रहा था। मुद्दे की बात पर आते हुए नानकजी ने कहा,‘यही तरकीब पूछने तो मैं आपके पास आया हूं। आप प्रजा का शोषण करके अनीति से जो धन एकत्र कर रहे हैं, उसे मरने के बाद जरूर ले जाना चाहते होंगे। मुझे भी बताएं कि मैं कंकड़ों को कैसे ले जा सकता हूं?’ राजा निरुत्तर हो गया। आज हर व्यक्ति अनीति से अर्जित धन के संग्रह को ही जीवन की सफलता मान बैठा है। विडंबना तो यह है कि ऐसे ही व्यक्ति प्रशंसा भी पा रहे हैं। जरूरत है प्रशंसा नीति की, हो सफलता की नहीं। क्योंकि अनीति की सफलता के लिए व्यक्ति ने कितना झूठ बोला है, कितनी रिश्वत दी है, कितने गरीबों का पेट काटा है, कितनी मिलावट की है, यह कोई नहीं देखता। परंतु आज ऐसे लोगों की सफलता के आगे हम सिर झुकाते हैं क्योंकि उन्होंने धन अर्जित किया है। 

समाज को उन्नत एवं खुशहाल बनाने के लिए जरूरी है कि हम कोरी नीति की बात ही नहीं करें, बल्कि उसे जीकर भी दिखाएं। एक अच्छा दिमाग भर होना काफी नहीं है, अहम बात यह है हमें इसका बेहतर इस्तेमाल करना भी आता हो। यदि नीति पर चलते हुए किसी कारणवश असफलता मिलती है तो वह भी कम गौरव की बात नहीं है कि व्यक्ति ने जो प्रयास किए, उसमें झूठ या छल-कपट आदि का सहारा नहीं लिया। जीवन में सफलता न मिलने पर हमारा भौतिक जीवन कुछ असुविधापूर्ण तो हो सकता है, पर नीति का त्याग कर देने से तो लोक-परलोक, आत्मसंतोष, चरित्र, धर्म, कर्तव्य और लोकहित सभी कुछ नष्ट हो जाता है।

वर्तमान जीवन की बड़ी त्रासदी है कि हम प्रतिष्ठित व्यक्ति अथवा किसी अपराधी व्यक्ति की प्रशंसा या सम्मान इसलिए करते हैं कि उसके पास जो पैसा और रसूख है, वह हमारे लिए लाभकारी हो सकता है। इस विकृति को रोकने के लिए दृष्टिकोण बदलना आवश्यक है।
