जीवन उसी का सार्थक है जो दूसरों के दुख को महसूस करे ..(Life that is meaningful to feel the suffering of others..)

संत कबीर की रचनाओं में एक दोहा आता है, ‘कबीरा जब हम पैदा भये, जग हंसा हम रोए। ऐसी करनी कर चलो, हम हंसे जग रोए।’

इस दोहे में कबीर ने भोगा हुआ सच व्यक्त किया है। यह प्रत्यक्ष अनुभव की बात है कि जब मनुष्य का जन्म होता है तब वह रोता है। यदि नहीं रोता तो उसे थपकी मार-मार कर रुलाने की कोशिश की जाती है। लेकिन उसके परिवार और समाज-बिरादरी के लोग अपनी प्रसन्नता व्यक्त करते थकते नहीं हैं। मृत्यु के समय मनुष्य मोहवश मरना नहीं चाहता। अत: वह रोता है। पर उसके परिवार व समाज की प्रतिक्रिया मृतक के जीवन-अवस्था में किए गए कार्यों व उसके व्यवहार पर निर्भर होती है।

यदि मरने वाले के कार्य और व्यवहार समाज के लिए कष्टकारी रहे हैं, तब लोग कहते हैं कि अच्छा ही हुआ। यानी उसकी मृत्यु पर वे प्रसन्न होते हैं और वे उसकी मृत्यु की अपेक्षा का भाव रखते हैं। यदि किसी व्यक्ति का जीवन दूसरों को समर्पित, परोपकार एवं करुणा से परिपूर्ण होता है तो लोग ऐसे व्यक्ति के लिए अत्यंत संवेदनशील रहते हैं और उसकी मृत्यु पर अति भावुक हो जाते हैं। 

हमारे अनेक संत मनुष्य को ऐसे ही कार्य करने की नसीहत देते रहे हैं, जिनसे अंत समय में व्यक्ति को यह संतोष अवश्य रहे कि मैं किसी के काम तो आया। किसी न किसी रूप में मैंने अपने जीवन का सदुपयोग ही किया।

मनुष्य तीन प्रकार के होते हैं। प्रथम - उत्तम पुरुष, जो औरों के लिए अपने स्वार्थ यहां तक कि अपने जीवन का भी बलिदान कर देते हैं। द्वितीय- मध्यम पुरुष, जो अपने स्वार्थ को पूरा करने के साथ ही दूसरों की स्वार्थपूर्ति में अपना भी योगदान प्रदान करते हैं। तृतीय श्रेणी में उन पुरुषों को समाहित किया गया है जो अपनी स्वार्थपूर्ति के लिए बिना कारण दूसरों को हानि पहुंचाते हैं।

इनमें, उत्तम पुरुष की मृत्यु के समय उनके द्वारा उपकृत व्यक्ति आंसू बहाएंगे ही। जीवन उसी का सार्थक होता है जो औरों को सुख पहुंचाने तथा उनका दुख दूर करने के लिए जीता है। अपने को सुखी बनाने में व्यतीत जीवन व्यर्थ होता है। अपना पेट तो सभी प्राणी भर लेते हैं, अपनों को सभी प्यार करते हैं, उनके लिए चार आंसू भी बहाते हैं, परंतु प्राय: वे पड़ोस के मृतक से कोई वास्ता नहीं रखते।

मनुष्य वही है जो अपने पेट के साथ-साथ दूसरे के पेट का भी भरण-पोषण करे तथा सभी को स्नेह प्रदान करे। हमें अपने सत्कर्मों की एक श्रृंखला अवश्य छोड़ जानी चाहिए ताकि मृत्यु के बाद लोग याद रखें। जीवन ईश्वर को समर्पित बुद्धि से सत्कर्म करते, सेवा-भाव से बीते। मनुष्य के नेक कर्म ही उसकी आंतरिक आत्मा को सुदृढ़ करते हैं। नश्वर शरीर तो अग्नि को समर्पित हो जाता है।
