गुरुकुल में अध्ययन करने आए छात्रों का सत्र पूरा हो रहा था। सभी उत्साहपूर्वक अपने-अपने घर लौटने की तैयारी कर रहे थे। तभी गुरुजी की आवाज सुनाई दी-‘सभी शिष्य मैदान में एकत्र हो जाएं।’ शिष्य मैदान में आकर खड़े हो गए। गुरुजी बोले, ‘प्रिय शिष्यो, मैं चाहता हूं कि यहां से प्रस्थान करने से पहले आप एक बाधा दौड़ में हिस्सा लें। इस दौड़ में आपको एक अंधेरी सुरंग से भी गुजरना पड़ेगा।’ सभी ने एक स्वर में कहा,‘हम तैयार हैं।’ दौड़ शुरू हुई। सभी शिष्य दौड़ते हुए सुरंग से गुजरे। उस सुरंग में जगह-जगह नुकीले पत्थर पड़े थे। उनकी चुभन से उनके पैरों में दर्द हो रहा था। दौड़ पूरी होने पर गुरुजी ने कहा,‘कुछ शिष्यों ने दौड़ बहुत जल्दी पूरी कर ली और कुछ ने बहुत अधिक समय लिया, भला ऐसा क्यों?’ एक शिष्य विनम्रतापूर्वक बोला, ‘गुरुजी हम सभी साथ-साथ दौड़ रहे थे, परंतु सुरंग में पहुंचते ही स्थिति बदल गई। कोई नुकीले पत्थरों की वजह से संभलकर आगे बढ़ रहा था। कुछ साथी ऐसे भी थे जो चुभने वाले पत्थरों को उठाकर जेब में रखते जा रहे थे ताकि पीछे आने वालों को पीड़ा न सहनी पड़े।’ गुरुजी बोले,‘ठीक है, जिन विद्यार्थियों ने पत्थर उठाएं हैं, वे आगे आएं और मुझे वे पत्थर दिखाएं।’ कुछ शिष्य सामने आकर पत्थर निकालने लगे। गुरुजी ने उनमें से एक पत्थर उठाकर शिष्यों से कहा- ‘जिन्हें तुम पत्थर समझ रहे हो, वे तो बहुमूल्य हीरे हैं। असल में इन्हें मैंने ही सुरंग में डाला था। ये हीरे उन शिष्यों को मेरी ओर से उपहार हैं जो दूसरों की पीड़ा के प्रति संवेदनशील हैं। यह दौड़ जीवन की प्रतिस्पर्धा को दर्शाती है, जिसमें हर कोई आगे निकलने के लिए दौड़ रहा है। किंतु अंतिम लक्ष्य उसी का सिद्ध होता है जो इस दौड़ती दुनिया में दूसरों का भला करते हुए आगे बढ़ता है। विजेता तो वही है।’
