आज का मानव अपने अवगुणों, दोषों और बुराइयों को न देखकर दूसरों के अवगुणों और दोषों को ज्यादा देखता है। यह मनुष्य के चरित्र की एक विडंबना वाली स्थिति है। इस तरह की सोच ने परिवार, समाज, राष्ट्र और विश्व में द्वेष का वातावरण निर्मित कर रखा है। ऐसे चरित्र के लोग अपना हित नहीं करते, वे दूसरों का अनिष्ट करने में ही रस लेते हैं। इस तरह के लोगों में नकारात्मकता अधिक सक्रिय होती है। इसी चारित्रिक दुर्बलता के कारण हमने अपने दोष देखने बंद कर दिए हैं और पड़ोसियों और परिचितों के छिद्रान्वेषण में जुट गए हैं। परिणाम हमारे सामने है। बुराई का परिणाम कभी अच्छा नहीं हो सकता। यदि हम सुख-शांति और आत्म-विकास के मार्ग पर अग्रसर होना चाहते हैं तो हमें विधाता के बताए अनुसार चलना होगा। हमें परदोष दर्शन पर अंकुश लगाना होगा और अपने दोषों पर सदा दृष्टि जमाए रखनी होगी। हमारे जीवन में आत्मनिरीक्षण और आत्मशोधन का प्रमुख स्थान है। आगमवाणी में वर्णित है कि खुद को देखो। जब तक हमारा चिंतन परदोष पर केंद्रित रहता है तब तक हम अपने जीवन की गहराई में प्रवेश नहीं कर सकते अर्थात अपनी कमियों को नहीं देख सकते। अपने स्वयं के सुधार और बदलाव के लिए स्वदोष दर्शन निहायत जरूरी है। उसके बिना जीवन की समग्रता को नहीं पाया जा सकता। यही वह स्थिति है जिससे हम अपनी विवशताओं और दुर्बलताओं पर विजय प्राप्त कर सकते हैं। एक मनीषी ने लिखा, ‘जब मैं अपने दोषों पर दृष्टि डालता हूं तो मेरे नेत्र छोटे हो जाते हैं और जब मैं दूसरों के दोष देखता हूं तो यही नेत्र विशाल हो जाते हैं।’ दोष दर्शन के संबंध में राजनीति और धर्मनीति की दिशा बिल्कुल भिन्न हो जाती है। जो दूसरों के दोषों का दर्शन और विवेचन करने की सामथ्र्य रखता है वह राजनीति में पंडित समझा जाता है, परंतु धर्मनीति के अनुसार विद्वान उसे ही समझा जाता है जो अपनी दुर्बलता का शोधन और विवेचन करने की क्षमता रखता है। इसलिए एक साधक और आत्मान्वेषी से यही अपेक्षा की जाती है कि वह आत्मा की शुद्धि के लिए परदोष दर्शन के मार्ग का परित्याग कर स्वदोष दर्शन के मार्ग का अनुगामी बने। इसी में ही उसका कल्याण है।
