हम सफल जीवन जी रहे हैं या असफल, सुखी हैं या दुखी, आगे बढ़ रहे हैं या पीछे जा रहे हैं यह सब इस बात पर निर्भर करता है कि हम किस दृष्टि से देख रहे हैं? हम सफलता का मापदंड इस बात से तय करते हैं कि जीवन के प्रति क्या दृष्टिकोण अपनाया है। जिस चीज को हम अपना केंद्र मानते हैं या धुरी बनाते हैं, उसी के इर्द-गिर्द घूमते हैं। जिस दृष्टिकोण से जीवन का लक्ष्य बनाया है, उसे पाने में जीवन की अधिकांश ऊर्जा लगाते हैं। सुख या दुख वस्तु के संग्रह से नापा जाएगा। इस दृष्टिकोण से सुख - दुख सापेक्षिक शब्द बन जाता है। किसी एक कार्य को करने में या कुछ उपलब्धियों को प्राप्त करने में एक व्यक्ति सुख की अनुभूति कर सकता है, लेकिन दूसरा दुख की। इसलिए यह व्यक्तिगत अनुभूति है। इसलिए जैसा एक व्यक्ति अपने लिए लक्ष्य तय करेगा, वैसा ही उसका मापदंड होगा और उसी से सुख-दुख, सफलता-असफलता तय करेगा और सुख-दुख का आभास करेगा। वास्तविक या निरपेक्ष सुख और सुखी जीवन वस्तु आधारित नहीं है, बल्कि सिद्धांत या मूल्य आधारित है और इस प्रकार का सुख सबके लिए समान अनुभूतिपरक है। 

व्यक्ति सुख की तलाश में सुख का आभास प्राप्त करता है और उसकी प्राप्ति के लिए क्या-क्या लक्ष्य बनाता है। कोई अपने परिवार को धुरी बनाता है तो कोई अपनी पत्नी या प्रेमी को। कोई धन प्राप्ति को बनाता है तो कोई यश प्राप्ति को। कोई माता-पिता को धुरी बनाता है तो कोई स्वयं को। कोई कार्य करने को धुरी बनाता है, तो कोई मौजमस्ती को। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति अपनी धुरी बनाकर कार्य करता है और उसी दृष्टि से जीवन की सफलता या असफलता को आंकता है। जो व्यक्ति धन कमाने व संग्रह करने को अपनी धुरी बनाते हैं, उन्हें चौबीस घंटे इसी की उधेड़बुन लगी रहती है। जब पैसा कमाना ही लक्ष्य रह गया है, तो जो भी उसमें बाधा है वह हटाने योग्य है और हटा दी जाती है। ऐसे लोगों को इस बात का दर्द नहीं होता कि इससे किसी को नुकसान हो रहा है। किसी का भी नुकसान हो या नफा, उन्हें पैसा मिलना चाहिए। जो लोग नियमित रूप से पैसा कमाना चाहते हैं, वे अपना पूरा दिलो-दिमाग धनार्जन और संग्रह पर लगा देते हैं और अपने जीवन के अन्य आवश्यक क्षेत्रों पर ध्यान गौण कर देते हैं। पैसा ही उनके लिए सब कुछ होता है।
