संकल्प के अनुसार महावीर रोजाना कौशांबी नगर में आहार-चर्या के लिए निकलते, लेकिन बिना कुछ लिए लौट जाते। ऐसा क्रम पांच-सात दिनों चलता तो शायद लोगों को मालूम न हो पाता, लेकिन ऐसा करते चार महीने बीत गए। बात फैल गई। हर आदमी चिंतित हो गया। कौशांबी नरेश शतानीक सहित नगर के सारे लोग उनसे आग्रह करने गए कि भोजन ग्रहण कर लें, लेकिन उन्होंने किसी की तरफ देखा तक नहीं। सबको लगा कि वे ऐसा कठोर तप किसी ध्यान-योग के प्रयोग में कर रहे हैं। पांच महीने पचीस दिन बाद अचानक आग की तरह खबर फैल गई कि तपस्वी ने आज आहार-ग्रहण कर लिया। सबके अंदर जिज्ञासा पैदा हो गई कि किन हाथों को इस दान का सौभाग्य मिला। सभी हैरान रह गए कि वे हाथ न राज-परिवार के थे और न किसी श्रेष्ठि-परिवार के। वे हाथ एक दासी के थे। वह भी ऐसी, जिसके हाथों में हथकड़ियां, पांवों में बेड़ियां, मुंडित सर पर शस्त्र के घाव थे। उसके हाथों से जो आहार मिला, वे थे उड़द के बासी बाकुले। 

वह वंदनीय हो गई। कौशांबी नरेश तक ने उसके चरणों की धूलि को अपने माथे पर लगाया। इसके साथ ही तत्कालीन समाज उस दास -प्रथा से मुक्त हो गया। उस दासी का नाम था वसुमती, जो इतिहास में चंदनवाला के नाम से जानी गई। महावीर का यह कदम प्रकारांतर से समाज और राज-व्यवस्था पर गहरी चोट था। महावीर ऐसे पहले इतिहास-पुरुष हैं जिन्होंने स्त्रियों के समर्थन में पूरे साहस और विश्वास के साथ आवाज उठाई। उन्होंने अपनी धर्म-क्रांति में जन्मना नहीं, श्रेष्ठता की व्यवस्था दी। क्या आज के लोग महावीर के संकल्प से कुछ सीख ले पाएंगे?
