दीवान का निर्णय ..(Diwan's decision ..)

महात्मा गांधी के दादा उत्तम गांधी को लोग ओता गांधी के नाम से पुकारते थे। वे पोरबंदर के राजा खिमजी के दीवान थे। उनके दोनों बेटों का विवाह धूमधाम से संपन्न हुआ। तब सारे गांव को भोज दिया गया था। रिवाज के अनुसार जब पूरे गांव को न्योता दिया जाता था, तब गांव के प्रवेश द्वार पर अक्षत-कुमकुम लगा कर घोषणा की जाती थी। भोज में हर जाति के गरीब और अमीर आते थे। बारात की अगवानी स्वयं राजा साहब ने की। ओता गांधी राजा के दीवान होने के साथ ईमानदार, खुशमिजाज और परोपकारी थे। वे राज्य के सभी लोगों का बराबर ध्यान रखते थे। इसलिए बेटे की शादी में शामिल होने वाले लोगों ने यथाशक्ति उपहार भी दिया था। विवाह संपन्न होने के बाद हिसाब-किताब हुआ तो पता चला कि खर्च से ज्यादा रकम उपहार में आई थी। ओता गांधी परेशान हो गए कि इन फालतू पैसों का करें तो क्या करें। उपहार में मिली रकम पर उनका हक था, लेकिन उन्होंने सोचा कि हम राज्य के दीवान हैं, इसीलिए लोगों ने अपनी सार्मथ्य से ज्यादा उपहार में दे दिया। उन्होंने सारी रकम राजा को समर्पित करते हुए कहा- आपकी प्रजा से ही यह सब प्राप्त हुआ है। यह आपकी संपत्ति है। राजा ने कहा, यह रकम आपको लोगों ने उपहार में दी है, इस पर आपका हक है, हमारा नहीं। इसका उपयोग भी आप को करना है। बहुत सोच-विचार कर ओता ने राजा से कहा - यह राज्य के गरीब किसानों के परिश्रम की कमाई है। इस पर हक उन्हीं का है। क्यों न इसे सूखाग्रस्त इलाके के किसानों को दे दिया जाए। दीवान के निर्णय से राजा बहुत खुश हुए।
