अचानक वह हार किसी को एक गंदे नाले में दिखा। हार तो दिखाई दे रहा था, पर पानी गंदा था। तभी एक सिपाही कूदा। बहुत हाथ मारा, पर कुछ नहीं मिला। पता नहीं हार कहां गायब हो गया। फिर कोतवाल ने देखा, तो वह भी कूद गया। फिर मंत्री कूदा। इस तरह उस नाले में भीड़ लग गई। लेकिन हार मिला किसी को नहीं - कोई भी कूदता, तो हार गायब हो जाता। 

राजा को खबर लगी तो उसने सोचा, क्यों न मैं ही कूद जाऊं, आधे राज्य से हाथ तो नहीं धोना पड़ेगा। वह भी कूद गया। इतने में एक महात्मा उधर से गुजरे। उन्होंने देखा तो हंसने लगे - यह क्या तमाशा है? राजा, प्रजा, मंत्री, सिपाही - सब कीचड़ में लथपथ, क्यों कूद रहे हो इसमें ?
