आखिरी काम ! ..(The last thing! ..)

एक बूढ़ा कारपेंटर अपने काम के लिए काफी जाना जाता था, उसके बनाये लकड़ी के घर दूर- दूर तक प्रसिद्द थे. पर अब बूढा हो जाने के कारण उसने सोचा कि बाकी की ज़िन्दगी आराम से गुजारी जाए और वह अगले दिन सुबह-सुबह अपने मालिक के पास पहुंचा और बोला,  "ठेकेदार साहब, मैंने बरसों आपकी सेवा की है पर अब मैं बाकी का समय आराम से पूजा-पाठ में बिताना चाहता हूँ, कृपया मुझे काम छोड़ने की अनुमति दें." 

ठेकेदार कारपेंटर को बहुत मानता था, इसलिए उसे ये सुनकर थोडा दुःख हुआ पर वो कारपेंटर को निराश नहीं करना चाहता था, उसने कहा,  "आप यहाँ के सबसे अनुभवी व्यक्ति हैं, आपकी कमी यहाँ कोई नहीं पूरी कर पायेगा लेकिन मैं आपसे निवेदन करता हूँ कि जाने से पहले एक आखिरी काम करते जाइये.”

“मालिक, क्या काम करना है?”  कारपेंटर ने पूछा.

“मैं चाहता हूँ कि आप जाते-जाते हमारे लिए एक और लकड़ी का घर तैयार कर दीजिये।”  ठेकेदार घर बनाने के लिए ज़रूरी पैसे देते हुए बोला.

कारपेंटर इस काम के लिए तैयार हो गया. उसने अगले दिन से ही घर बनाना शुरू कर दिया, पर ये जान कर कि ये उसका आखिरी काम है और इसके बाद उसे और कुछ नहीं करना होगा वो थोड़ा ढीला पड़ गया. पहले जहाँ वह बड़ी सावधानी से लकड़ियाँ चुनता और काटता था अब बस काम चालाऊ तरीके से ये सब करने लगा. कुछ एक हफ्तों में घर तैयार हो गया और वो ठेकेदार के पास पहुंचा, "ठेकेदार साहब, मैंने घर तैयार कर लिया है, अब तो मैं काम छोड़ कर जा सकता हूँ?”

ठेकेदार बोला - हाँ, आप बिलकुल जा सकते हैं लेकिन अब आपको अपने पुराने छोटे से घर में जाने की ज़रुरत नहीं है, क्योंकि इस बार जो घर आपने बनाया है वो आपकी बर्षो की मेहनत का इनाम है; जाइये अपने परिवार के साथ उसमे खुशहाली से रहिये”!.

कारपेंटर यह सुनकर स्तब्ध रह गया, वह मन ही मन सोचने लगा, “कहाँ मैंने दूसरों के लिए एक से बढ़ कर एक घर बनाये और अपने घर को ही इतने घटिया तरीके से बना बैठा। ... क़ाश मैंने ये घर भी बाकी घरों की तरह ही बनाया होता.”

दोस्तों, कब आपका कौन सा काम किस तरह आपको प्रभावित कर सकता है ये बताना मुश्किल है. ये भी समझने की ज़रुरत है कि हमारा काम हमारी पहचान बना भी सकता है और बिगाड़ भी सकता है. इसलिए हमारी कोशिश होनी चाहिए कि हम हर एक काम अपनी best of abilities के साथ करें फिर चाहे वो हमारा आखिरी काम ही क्यों न हो!
