एक फकीर एक बंजारे की सेवा से बहुत खुश हो गया। उसने बंजारे को एक गधा भेंट किया। बंजारा बहुत खुश हुआ क्योंकि अब न तो उसे बोझ ही ढोना पड़ता और न पैदल चलना पड़ता। लेकिन एक दिन लंबी यात्रा में गधा बीमार पड़ गया और परलोक सिधार गया। दुखी बंजारे ने एक गड्ढा खोदकर उसे दबा दिया और वहीं बैठकर रोने लगा। इतने में एक यात्री वहां से गुजरा। उसने सोचा, जरूर किसी महान व्यक्ति की मृत्यु हो गई है। वह थोड़ा सा झुका और उसने वहां कुछ पैसे चढ़ा दिए। बंजारा यह देखकर चकित हुआ और उसने कुछ कहना चाहा, लेकिन यह सोचकर नहीं बोला कि इससे यात्री की श्रद्धा को ठेस पहुंचेगी। 

उसके जाने के बाद बंजारे ने सोचा, इस प्रकार तो अन्य यात्री भी आकर पैसा चढ़ाने लगेंगे। यह अच्छा खासा धंधा हो जाएगा। बस, वह हर रोज वहां आता, बैठकर रोने का नाटक करता। लोग आते, उसे देखकर नतमस्तक होते और पैसा चढ़ा जाते। उसने उस जगह को एक समाधि का रूप दे दिया और खबर फैला दी कि किसी महान व्यक्ति की मृत्यु हो गई। धीरे-धीरे गधे की कब्र महान व्यक्ति की समाधि मान ली गई। धीरे धीरे बंजारा धनवान हो गया।

अचानक एक रोज वही फकीर, जिसने बंजारे को गधा दिया था, वहां से गुजर रहा था। उसने सोचा कि चलो समाधि के दर्शन कर लें। जब फकीर वहां पहुंचा, तो उसने देखा, अरे, यह तो वही बंजारा है। उसने बंजारे से पूछा -‘ये बता, तू क्यों रो रहा है?’ बंजारे ने कहा -‘अब आपसे क्या छिपाना, असल में यह उसी गधे की कब्र है, जिसे आपने मुझे भेंट किया था। जीते जी तो इसने खूब सेवा की ही, मरने के बाद भी सेवा कर रहा है। अब मुझे कोई कमी नहीं रही।’ फकीर ने हंसते हुए कहा-‘जिस गांव में मैं रहता हूं, वहां भी ऐसी ही एक कब्र है। तुझे पता है किसकी कब्र है वह? वह इसी गधे की मां की कब्र है।’ 

धर्म के नाम पर, इस प्रकार भी लोगों को छला जा रहा है। लोग वहां जाते हैं, जहां भगवान आए थे। जहां भगवान ने विश्राम किया था। लेकिन वहां जाने के लिए कोई तैयार नहीं, जहां भगवान हैं। वास्तव में साक्षात भगवान जहां हैं, वहां जाने के लिए कोई तैयार नहीं। तुम्हारा असली भगवान तुम्हारे ही अंदर है, जो जीता-जागता है। अपने उस भगवान के भी तो दर्शन करने चाहिए जो हर समय तुम्हारे साथ मौजूद रहता है। जहां भगवान हैं, वही है तुम्हारा असली तीर्थ। असली तीर्थ भी तुम्हारे ही अंदर है। वहां भी जाना चाहिए, परमानंद पाना चाहिए। आंखें खोलो। अपने भीतर विराजे आत्मास्वरूप भगवान का दर्शन करो। आत्मानुभव से ही असलियत मालूम होगी।
