एक आदमी रोज सुबह के वक्त मंदिर जाता और एक दीपक जलाकर रख आता। यह सिलसिला काफी लंबे अर्से से चला आ रहा था। मंदिर के ठीक सामने अपने घर की बैठक में बैठे एक नौजवान ने एक 

दिन उसे देख लिया। जब वह दीपक जलाकर जाने लगा तो उसने उसे रोककर पूछा- ‘भाई साहब, भगवान में आपकी बड़ी गहरी श्रद्धा मालूम होती है। न जाड़ा देखते हो, न गर्मी, न बरसात, नित्य नियम से यहां आकर दीया जला जाते हो। वह आदमी हंसा और बोला- सवाल श्रद्धा का नहीं, दूसरा है। एक बार की बात है, मैं एक मुकदमे में फंस गया। तब मैंने भगवान से प्रार्थना की कि मैं मुकदमा जीत जाने पर रोज मंदिर में आकर दीपक जलाया करूंगा। भगवान ने मेरी सुन ली। मेरी जीत हो गई। उसी दिन से मैं बराबर अपने वचन का पालन कर रहा हूं।’ नौजवान ने उत्सुकता से पूछा-‘क्यों भाई, वह मुकदमा क्या था/’ गंभीर होकर वह आदमी बोला-‘अरे क्या बताऊं, मैंने नीचे के लोगों को मिलाकर एक जमीन अपने नाम करा ली। पड़ोसी उस मामले को अदालत में ले गया। भगवान ने कृपा करके पड़ोसी को हरा दिया। और बस, वह जमीन मेरी हो गई।’

नौजवान ने उस आदमी को कठोर दृष्टि से देखा और कहा- ‘हमने तो सुना था कि भगवान सदा न्याय में साथ देते हैं, अन्याय में नहीं।’ आदमी ने बुरा मुंह बनाते हुए कहा- ‘कैसी बेतुकी बातें करते हो।’ नौजवान ने उसे टोका, ‘तुम बाहर भले ही दीपक जलाते हो, लेकिन तुम्हारे भीतर का दीपक तो तब से बुझा ही पड़ा है।’ नौजवान की बात समझते ही आदमी का सिर शर्म से झुक गया।
