हममें से अधिकतर लोगों का मन केवल सफलता की चाह रखता है। वह सफलता को प्रसिद्धि से जोड़ कर चलता है। उम्र कोई भी हो, काम छोटा हो या बड़ा, जब तक प्रशंसा न मिले व्यक्ति खिन्न ही रहता है। दूसरे की प्रशंसा करना, उसकी सफलता से सहज रूप में प्रसन्न होना, हर किसी के वश की बात नहीं होती। जो हम नहीं दे पाते उसकी दूसरे से अपेक्षा करने वाला हमेशा दुखी रहेगा। अपने काम से स्वयं खुश होना आवश्यक है, क्योंकि व्यक्ति का अंतर्मन जानता है कि उसने उस काम को अपना पूर्ण समर्पण और प्रयत्न दिया है या नहीं। 

मन से सही ढंग से काम को पूरा कर पाना मनुष्य को आधी सफलता तक तो पहुंचा ही देता है। फिर भी कभी सफलता मिल जाती है और कभी नहीं मिल पाती। किंतु सफलता देवी की तरह नहीं पूजी जानी चाहिए। वह केवल इष्ट प्राप्ति के एक माध्यम की तरह ली जानी चाहिए। क्योंकि सच यह है कि केवल ताकत या बुद्धिमानी से नहीं, हमारे निरंतर किए जाने वाले प्रयासों से ही संभावनाओं के नए द्वार खुलते हैं। माना कि इंसान की नजर उच्चतम लक्ष्य की ओर होनी चाहिए, परंतु इसका मतलब यह कदापि नहीं है कि जो हासिल किया गया वह बेमानी है। प्रत्येक व्यक्ति की क्षमता अलग होती है। जो किसी व्यक्ति को मिलता है, शायद उसके लिए वही संभव हो। या फिर कोशिश से वह और बेहतर हो सकता है। यह मेहनत करने वाला खुद ही अच्छी तरह आंक सकता है। दूसरों के दबाव या सुझाव से तय किया चुनाव गलत साबित हो सकता है, पर सदा दिमाग के पास भी वह नक्शा नहीं होता जो यह बता सके कि दिल कहां जाना चाहता है। असंगत ताल-मेल से सफलता की इच्छा अधूरी रह जाती है। इसीलिए नतीजों के आधार पर क्षमता का फैसला अन्यायपूर्ण होता है। परीक्षाफल का आना सभी के लिए तनावपूर्ण होता है। कुछ छात्र तो नतीजा जाने बिना महज आशंका से आत्महत्या कर लेते हैं, जबकि कुछ दूसरे अपने सोचे प्रतिशतों से कम होने की खुद को सजा देने लगते हैं।

इसके लिए उनके परिवारों और शिक्षकों को खुद को जिम्मेदार मानना चाहिए। आज छात्रों को प्रतिशतों के फेर में उलझा दिया जाता है। उनकी शिक्षा उन्हें इतना दुर्बल बनाती है कि वे जीवन को परीक्षाफल का मोहताज मान कर चलते हैं। 

क्या उनसे अपेक्षाएं ज्यादा हैं? या आज के पैमाने ज्यादा ही ऊंचे होते जा रहे हैं? क्या उनमें यह भरोसा नहीं जगाना चाहिए कि हार के बाद सब रास्ते बंद नहीं होते। खुद में विश्वास और निरंतर प्रयास बंद दरवाजों को खोल कर सफलता की राह दिखा देगा। कथाकार एना जेकब्स का मानना है, ‘जिंदगी की हवा हमें जिधर ले जाती है, आशा के पंख उससे कहीं ऊपर उड़ा कर ले जाते हैं।’
