‘भीख मांगना अच्छा नहीं, पर यदि नेक कार्य के लिए भीख मांगनी पड़े तो मैं वह भी करूंगा’ यह कहकर मालवीय जी ने विश्व विद्यालय के लिए दान मांगने का अभियान चलाया। 

एक बंगाली सज्जन ने पांच हजार रुपया नकद दान दिया तो उनकी धर्मपत्नी ने बहुमूल्य कंगन दे दिया। पति ने फिर दोगुना दाम देकर कंगन खरीद लिया। उनकी यह दान देने की शुद्ध भावना ही थी कि पत्नी कंगन दान में देती और पति उसे पुनः दोगुने दाम देकर वापस ले लेता। ऐसा करते हुए ही पत्नी ने वह कंगन फिर दान दे में दिया। यह क्रम इतनी देर तक चलता रहा कि रात हो गई और चारों तरफ अंधेरा हो गया। ऐसे में लैंप की रोशनी में ही आई धनराशि गिनी जाने लगी। दूसरी ओर धन संग्रह एवं नीलामी का काम भी चल रहा था। तभी कोई बदमाश व्यक्ति पहुंचा और बत्ती बुझाकर रुपयों से भरी तीनों थैलियां छीनकर ले भागा। सब लोग इस घटना को लेकर दुखी बैठे थे कि उनमें से एक सज्जन ने मालवीय जी से कहा, ‘पंडित जी, इस पवित्र और नेक कार्य में भी जब लोग धूर्तता से बाज नहीं आते तो आप ही क्यों व्यर्थ परेशानियों का बोझ अपने सिर पर लेते हैं? कोई बड़ा काम किया जाए, यह देश इस योग्य है ही नहीं।’ यह बात सुनकर मालवीय जी थोड़ा मुस्कराए और फिर कहने लगे, ‘देखो भाई, बदमाश तो एक ही था। सौ भलों के बीच एक बुरे से घबराना क्यों? दुर्जनों से हार मान जाऊं, यह मेरे लिए संभव नहीं। इस तरह यदि सत्प्रवृत्तियां रुक जाएं तो संसार नरक बन जाएगा। हम वह स्थिति नहीं लाना चाहते, इसलिए प्रयत्न जारी रखेंगे।’ मालवीय जी के आत्मविश्वास से भरे शब्द सुनकर सब में नवीन शक्ति का संचार हो गया और सभी दोगुने जोश के साथ नेक कार्य में पुनः जुट गए।
