अहसास गलती का ..(Realization of fault..)

उन दिनों ईश्वरचंद्र विद्यासागर एक संस्कृत कॉलेज के आचार्य थे। एक बार उन्हें किसी काम से प्रेसीडेंसी कॉलेज के अंग्रेज आचार्य कैर से मिलने जाना पड़ा। कैर भारतीयों से घृणा करते थे। जिस समय ईश्वरचंद्र उनके पास पहुंचे, वह मेज पर जूते रख पैर फैलाकर बैठे हुए थे। ईश्वरचंद्र को देखकर भी न तो वह उनके सम्मान में खड़े हुए और न ही उनके अभिवादन का जवाब दिया। ईश्वरचंद्र ने उस समय तो कुछ नहीं कहा। लेकिन तय कर लिया कि कैर को उसकी गलती का अहसास अवश्य कराएंगे। संयोगवश कुछ ही समय बाद कैर को ईश्वरचंद्र से एक काम पड़ गया। वह उनके पास पहुंचे। कैर को अपने पास आते देख, उन्होंने चप्पलें पहनीं और मेज पर पैर फैलाकर बैठ गए। कैर एकदम सामने आ खड़े हुए, फिर भी उन्होंने बैठने के लिए नहीं कहा। यह देखकर कैर गुस्से से तिलमिला गए और उन्होंने इस दुर्व्यवहार की शिकायत लिखित में शिक्षा परिषद के सचिव डॉ. मुआट से कर दी। मुआट ईश्वरचंद्र विद्यासागर को भली-भांति जानते थे। फिर भी उन्होंने इस सिलसिले में उन्हें पूछताछ के लिए बुलाया और कैर की शिकायत का जिक्र किया। कैर वहीं सामने गर्व से सीना तान कर खड़े थे। डॉ. मुआट की बात सुनकर ईश्वरचंद्र बोले, ‘हम भारतीय लोग तो अंग्रेजों से ही शिष्टाचार सीखते हैं। जब मैं कैर से मिलने गया तो ये जूते पहनकर आराम से मेज पर पैर फैलाकर बैठे थे और इन्होंने इसी अंदाज में मेरा स्वागत किया था। मुझे लगा कि शायद यूरोपीय शिष्टाचार ऐसा ही होता है।’ यह सुनकर कैर बहुत शर्मिंदा हो गए और उन्हें अपनी गलती का अहसास हो गया।
