संयम का संदेश ..(The message of abstinence ..)

महात्मा गांधी उन दिनों दक्षिण अफ्रीका में रंगभेद के खिलाफ जंग लड़ रहे थे। उसी दौरान उनकी मुलाकात कालेनबाक नामक एक गोरे से हुई। गांधीजी से बेहद प्रभावित केलन बैक हमेशा के लिए उनके अनुयायी बन गए। वह धनाढ्य व्यक्ति थे और अकेले ही रहते थे। पहली बार जब गांधीजी जेल गए तो उनकी अनुपस्थिति में उन्होंने गांधीजी के आंदोलन को संभाला और उनकी रिहाई के लिए अभियान भी छेड़ दिया। हफ्ते भर बाद गांधीजी की रिहाई का आदेश हो गया। यह सुनकर कालेनबाक ने खुशी व्यक्त करने के लिए सबसे महंगी कार खरीदी। रिहाई के दिन वह रॉल्स रॉयस लेकर जेल पहुंचे। गांधीजी जेल के बाहर निकले तो खूबसूरत नई गाड़ी के साथ कालेनबाक को देखकर अचंभे में पड़ गए। उनको बुरा भी लगा। उन्होंने पूछा, ‘यह गाड़ी किसके लिए है?’ कालेनबाक ने कहा, ‘यह आपके लिए लेकर आया हूं। इसमें बैठाकर आपको घर ले जाऊंगा।’ गांधीजी ने कहा, ‘तुम गाड़ी से चलो। मैं पीछे-पीछे आता हूं।’ इतना कह कर वह आगे बढ़ गए। कालेनबाक गांधीजी की नाराजगी समझ गए। उन्होंने गांधीजी से कहा, ‘आप थोड़ी देर इंतजार कीजिए। मैं अभी आता हूं।’ सेकेंड हैंड मार्केट में उन्होंने पंद्रह हजार रुपये के नुकसान पर गाड़ी बेच दी। इस बीच गांधीजी जेल के दरवाजे के बाहर उनकी प्रतीक्षा करते रहे। गाड़ी बेच कर पैदल लौटने पर कालेनबाक ने कहा, ‘अब तो ठीक है न गांधीजी।’ गांधीजी ने मुस्करा कर कहा, ‘हां, अब बिल्कुल ठीक है। यह मत भूलो कि हम गरीब देश के गरीब इंसान हैं। हमारी लड़ाई गरीबों के लिए है। उनके लिए ही हमें जेल जाना पड़ा। यहां हमें कुली बैरिस्टर कहा जाता है। हमें यह शोभा नहीं देता कि हम इतनी महंगी गाड़ी में सवारी करें।’ इस तरह गांधी ने अपने प्रिय मित्र को संयम का संदेश दिया।
