जोआओ परेरा डिसूजा की उम्र 71 साल है। वे ब्राजील के रहने वाले हैं और राजधानी रियो द जनीरो से थोड़ी ही दूर एक छोटे से समुद्री टापू पर बसे गांव में रहते हैं। जोआओ पहले एक ईंट भट्ठे पर मजदूरी करते थे। अब उम्र ज्यादा हो जाने के कारण घर पर ही रहते हैं और मछलियां पकड़ कर अपने परिवार का गुजारा करते हैं। पांच साल पहले की बात है, एक सुबह उन्हें समुद्र तट पर पेंग्विन का एक छोटा सा बच्चा मिला। वह बुरी तरह से कच्चे तेल में लिथड़ा हुआ था और अपनी अंतिम सांसें ले रहा था।

जोआओ पेंग्विन को घर ले आए, बड़ी मुश्किल से उसके शरीर पर लगा तेल साफ किया और थोड़ी जान आ जाने पर उसको मछली खिलाई। और हां, जोआओ ने पेंग्विन को एक नाम भी दिया- डिंडिम। हफ्ता भर बाद उन्होंने डिंडिम को वापस समुद्र में छोड़ने की कोशिश की। लेकिन यह क्या/ वह तो वापस जाने को राजी ही नहीं हुआ। जिद करके जोआओ के पीछे-पीछे उनके घर आ गया और 11 महीने उनके साथ ही रहा। बाद में पता चला कि वह पंखों समेत अपनी पूरी चमड़ी बदल जाने का इंतजार कर रहा था। जैसे ही यह काम पूरा हुआ, वह चुपचाप नौ-दो ग्यारह हो गया। जोआओ को कुछ दिन बुरा लगा, फिर डिंडिम की घर वापसी को लेकर उन्हें खुशी भी हुई।

और कुछ महीनों बाद, जब जोआओ डिंडिम को भूलने लगे थे, एक दिन उन्हें समुद्र तट पर कार के हॉर्न जैसी कोई आवाज सुनाई पड़ी। जोआओ ने उधर मुड़कर देखा और पाया कि एक हट्टा-कट्टा पेंग्विन अपने दोनों पंख दाएं-बाएं हिलाता, दौड़ता हुआ उनकी तरफ आ रहा है। बर्फीले, ध्रुवीय इलाकों में रहने वाले पेंग्विन अव्वल तो ब्राजील के गर्म समुद्री तटों पर कभी आते नहीं। घोर जाड़ों में भूला-भटका कोई पहुंच भी जाए तो उसके इंसानों के करीब आने की बात भी नहीं सोची जा सकती। लेकिन यह पेंग्विन जब किसी कुत्ते की तरह आकर जोआओ से बिल्कुल लिपट गया तो वे तुरंत समझ गए कि यह डिंडिम है, जो न जाने कितना लंबा सफर तय करके उनसे मिलने और अपनी जान बचाने के लिए उनका शुक्रिया कहने चला आया है। 

इस बार भी डिंडिम जोआओ से मिलकर तुरंत वापस नहीं गया। एक बार फिर कुछ महीनों के लिए उनका मेहमान बना और फिर अपनी सुविधा से वापस समुद्र में चला गया। तब से अब तक यह सिलसिला पांच बार दोहराया जा चुका है। डिंडिम के आने का समय तय है, सो किस्सा सुनकर ब्राजील के एक टीवी चैनल ने इस पर एक डॉक्युमेंट्री भी बना डाली है। जीवविज्ञानियों का आकलन है कि डिंडिम हर साल पांच हजार मील का सफर तय करके जोआओ के पास पहुंचता है और फिर अपनी प्राकृतिक जिंदगी में वापस चला जाता है।
