एक बार मशहूर खगोलशास्त्री अल ख्वारिज्मी गांव की सैर पर निकले। उस वक्त वह तारों को देखकर जीवन की गति बता दिया करते थे। तारों की गणना में उस वक्त उनका कोई मुकाबला नहीं था और चारों तरफ उनकी इस विद्या के चर्चे थे। रात में वह तारों से भरा आसमान देखते चले जा रहे थे कि पैरों के नीचे गहरा गढ्ढा आया और वह उसमें गिर गए। रात में काफी देर तक वे उसी गड्ढे में पड़े-पड़े मदद के लिए चीखते रहे, पर दूर-दूर तक कोई सुनने वाला नहीं था। काफी देर तक चीखने-चिल्लाने के बाद एक बुढ़िया आई और उसने इन्हें नीचे गिरे देखा। वह अनपढ़ बुढ़िया बहुत जद्दोजहद के बाद इन्हें निकाल पाई। बाहर निकलते ही अल ख्वारिज्मी ने बुढ़िया को धन्यवाद दिया। बुढ़िया मुस्कुराई और आगे बढ़ गई। तब इन्होंने उससे पूछा कि आपने हमें पहचाना नहीं? हम मशहूर ज्योतिषी भी हैं। तारों को देखकर आपकी जिंदगी के बारे में बता सकते हैं। आपने हमारी मदद की है इसलिए हम कृतज्ञता वश अपने इस हुनर से आपको आने वाला कल बता दें। तब बुढ़िया ने पलट कर कहा जिसे जमीन के गड्ढों के बारे में न पता हो वह क्या खाक जानता है? पहले जहां चल रहे हो उसे जान लो बाद में तारों को पढ़ना। बुढ़िया की बात उनके दिल में लग गई क्योंकि यह सच था। जब जमीन का नहीं पता तो आसमान को जानकर क्या करेंगे? वह लग गए पाताल की खोज में और दुनिया में सबसे ज्यादा नाम भूगर्भशास्त्री के रूप में कमाया। जिस दिन हम सच को जान लेते हैं, उसी दिन दुनिया को आसान करने की गांठ खुलने लगती है। हम सबको अपने गर्व के बिना सीखने में लगना चाहिए। किसी भी इंसान की एक बात हमारी दिशा बदल सकती है अगर उसमें सच्चाई हो। जैसे उस बूढ़ी औरत ने अल ख्वारिज्मी की दिशा बदल दी।
