साथ के पांच साधु उनकी समाधि भंग समझ उन्हें छोड़कर चले गए। उनकी समाधि पूर्ण हुई, परिणामस्वरूप उन्हें परम प्रकाश का अनुभव हुआ। फिर गौतम ने उन पांच साधुओं को तलाशा जो उन्हें छोड़ गए थे। गौतम ने कहा - ‘साधुओ, खीर खाकर मैंने कठोर तपस्या का त्याग अवश्य किया, मगर मैं भोगी नहीं बना। मैंने मध्य मार्ग अपनाया। सत्य की प्राप्ति न तो भोग से है न ही शरीर को कष्ट देने में, अतः मध्य मार्ग को पहचानें। मनुष्य सत्य की खोज के लिए स्वतंत्र है। अनुभूति ही धर्म का आधार है। भगवान बुद्ध ने अपने उपदेशों में बोल-चाल की भाषा का उपयोग किया। उनके शिष्यों ने ही उनके उपदेशों को संकलित किया। भगवान बुद्ध के उपदेशों से साधु-संतों में खलबली मच गई। उनके द्वारा प्रवर्तित धर्म बौद्ध धर्म कहलाया। वाराणसी से कुछ दूर सारनाथ उन्हीं के कारण बौद्धों के लिए पवित्र स्थान बन गया। उन्होंने कहा- ‘भिक्षुओ, अब तुम संसार में फैल जाओ और धर्म-चक्र का प्रवर्तन करते हुए मानव जाति का कल्याण करो। 

सारनाथ से लौटकर वह गया पहुंचे, जहां उन्हें ज्ञान का प्रकाश मिला। उन्होंने राजा बिंबिसार को अपना शिष्य बनाया। इसके बाद श्रावस्ती पहुंचे, जैतवन में रहकर उपदेश दिए। वैशाली की आम्रपाली की कथा भी प्रसिद्ध है।

महात्मा बुद्ध ने जिस संघ की स्थापना की थी, उनके नियम अत्यधिक कठोर थे। उनका पालन वही कर सकते थे जो सांसारिक बंधनों से ऊपर उठ चुके थे। महात्मा बुद्ध के शिष्यों की संख्या बढ़ती गई। अंतिम दिनों में उन्होंने शिष्यों से कहा - तीन माह में शरीर त्याग दूंगा। शिष्य रोने लगे, तब उन्होंने कहा कि इस शरीर के लिए क्या रोना? तथागत का कार्य पूरा हो चुका है। उनके अंतिम शब्द थे - ‘सभी वस्तुएं नश्वर हैं, प्रयत्न करके अपना उद्धार करो।’ वैशाख पूर्णिमा के ही दिन उन्होंने शरीर त्यागा था।
