धर्म जगत ने धर्म को केवल परलोक के साथ जोड़कर भारी भूल की है। इसका परिणाम यह हुआ कि धर्म का असली प्रयोजन तिरोहित हो गया। वह स्वर्ग-सुखों के प्रलोभन और नरक-दुख के भय से जुड़ गया। हर धर्म-प्रवर्तक ने धर्म को जीवन से जोड़ा, किंतु धर्म-परंपराओं ने उसे स्वर्ग और नरक से जोड़ दिया। धर्म का मूल केंद्र वर्तमान है न कि भूत और भविष्य। हम वर्तमान क्षण को कैसे जियें, धर्म का सारा दर्शन इसी पर टिका हुआ है। वर्तमान विषम है तो भविष्य भी विषम होगा। यदि वर्तमान सम और सुखमय है तो भविष्य भी सम और सुखमय ही होगा। धर्म का असली प्रयोजन वर्तमान को सजाने-संवारने का है। 

उस केंद्रीय विचार से भटक जाने के कारण धर्म भूत और भविष्य में उलझ गया। वर्तमान को उसने बिल्कुल ही भुला दिया। इसलिए लोगों ने वर्तमान को केवल अतीत का परिणाम मान लिया। इससे भाग्यवाद की विचारधारा का जन्म हुआ। भाग्य को बदला नहीं जा सकता, इसलिए वे वर्तमान से विमुख हो गए और भविष्य की चिंता में पड़ गए। जिसके पास कोठी, महंगी कार और विदेशों में छुट्टी मनाने के साधन हैं, वे अतीत के परिणाम हैं। जो वैभव-संपन्न नहीं हैं, वे जप-तप में इसलिए लगे हैं ताकि भविष्य में भी साधन-संपन्न बन सकें। धर्म का पूरा उद्देश्य ही बदल गया। जो आत्म-केंद्रित था, वह वस्तु-केंद्रित हो गया। जो वस्तु-विमुख था, वह वस्तु-सम्मुख बन गया। इसी विचार के फलस्वरूप धर्म के नाम पर व्यापार और सौदेबाजी चलने लगी। जहां भी प्रलोभन और भय है वहां धर्म नहीं है। धर्म है आत्म उज्ज्वलता का साधन। धर्म है सोई हुई शक्तियों के पुनर्जागरण का उपादान। यह है आत्म-स्वभाव में रमण। धर्म ही है आत्म शांति और विश्व शांति का एकमात्र साधन। वर्तमान जीवन को आनंदपूर्ण बनाने का गुर। भगवान महावीर ने कहा है - आत्मा ही नरक है, आत्मा में ही स्वर्ग है, आत्मा में ही बंधन है, आत्मा में ही मोक्ष है। जिसके भीतर नरक नहीं, उसके लिए बाहर कहीं भी नरक नहीं। जिसके भीतर स्वर्ग नहीं, उसके लिए बाहर कहीं भी स्वर्ग नहीं। महावीर ने भीतर पर जोर दिया जबकि हम बाहर पर जोर दे रहे हैं। बाहर के स्वर्ग और नरक की चिंता में उलझे हैं। 

इसी चिंतन का दुष्परिणाम यह हुआ कि बाहर से जप-तप, पूजा-पाठ चल रहे हैं, लेकिन दूसरी तरफ छल-कपट, शोषण, राग-द्वेष, नफरत भी पल रहे हैं। यानी धर्म करते हुए भी जीवन में कोई परिवर्तन नहीं है, कोई क्रांति नहीं है। इसी वजह से जीवन की शांति गायब हो गई। शांति वर्तमान में ही घटित हो सकती है। इसलिए हम अपने को वर्तमान से जोड़ें। अगर हम ये सोचे को वर्तमान में  हम किसी को दुःख पहुचाएंगे, हत्या करेंगे तो मुझे में इसी जन्म ने यानी वर्तमान में ही इसका दंड भोगना पड़ेगा। इसलिए वर्तमान में जिए, और दुसरो की सेवा करने, सहयोग करने के लिए हमेशा तत्पर रहे. यही सच्ची पूजा है, साधना है, यही धर्म है.
