एक बार महात्मा गांधी काशी आए। वह काशी विद्यापीठ में ठहरे। उनके साथ मदनमोहन मालवीय, राजर्षि टंडन, राजेंद्र प्रसाद और कई अन्य प्रमुख नेता भी थे। विद्यापीठ के परिसर में एक कुआं था। एक स्वयंसेवक को जिम्मेदारी दी गई कि वह नेताओं के स्नान की व्यवस्था उनके कमरे के पास ही करे। वह कुएं से पानी निकाल रहा था कि तभी केवल धोती लपेटे खुले बदन राजेंद्र बाबू वहां पहुंचे। उन्होंने उस स्वयंसेवक से कहा,‘भइया, एक मिनट के लिए मुझे बाल्टी दे दो। मैं कुएं से पानी निकाल कर स्नान कर लूं।’ स्वयंसेवक राजेंद्र बाबू को पहचानता नहीं था। उसने कहा,‘बाल्टी अभी खाली नहीं है। अभी तो मैं बाहर से आए बड़े-बड़े नेताओं के कमरे में पानी पहुंचा रहा हूं।’ इस पर राजेंद्र बाबू मुस्कराए और बोले,‘कोई बात नहीं। अभी तुम अपना काम कर लो। जब बाल्टी खाली हो जाए तो दे देना।’ इतना कह कर वह कुएं के चबूतरे पर बैठ गए। कुछ देर के बाद ठक्कर बापा आए। उन्होंने राजेंद्र बाबू को बैठा देख कर कहा, ‘अरे, राजेंद्र बाबू आप यहां कैसे बैठे हुए हैं। चलिए कमरे में। यह आदमी आपके लिए वहीं पानी पहुंचा देगा। वहीं नहा लीजिएगा।’ राजेंद्र बाबू का नाम सुनते ही स्वयंसेवक सकपका गया। उसने बाल्टी को कुएं पर रखा और दौड़ कर राजेंद्र बाबू के पांव पकड़ने के लिए झुका। राजेंद्र बाबू ने उसे झुकने से पहले ही पकड़ लिया और स्नेहपूर्वक कहा, ‘भइया, तुम यह क्या कर रहे हो।’ स्वयंसेवक क्षमा याचना करने लगा। राजेंद्र बाबू बोले,‘तुमने तो कोई गलती की ही नहीं तो फिर क्षमा क्यों मांग रहे हो। तुम तो अपना काम ईमानदारी और निष्ठा से कर रहे हो।’ यह कहकर राजेंद्र बाबू ने स्वयं पानी निकाल कर स्नान किया। उनकी सादगी देख कर स्वयंसेवक भाव-विभोर हो गया।
